What does your doctor say?

In a very few cases I believe people on MTX can get pneumonitis. I'm

sure your dr is keeping an eye on your condition.

My husband was coughing like that for quite a while and he was told

he had coughing asthma. That was new to us but it is improving. They

gave him an oral corticosteroid spray to use am and pm and it has

eased up. He does not have RA but perhaps there is no connection to

the RA & MTX

  • 2 weeks later...

I was on MTx and go "drug induced pneumonitis" This can be a fatal side effect of MTX. Do not let the cough go unchecked by your Rheummy. There was a case a year ago of an older man that died from this. Sometimes the damage is not reversible.

I was lucky. Mine was caught very early and the MTX stopped and my lungs healed in about 6 weeks and things returned to normal.

Annette,

It started with as mild cough that progressed to a choking cough. It was so bad that it was impossible to get a whole sentence out without going into a coughing fit. Its a dry none productive cough. Its as if there is something stuck down there and you can't get it to come up. It was terrible. It got to the point where my lungs, the surrounding muscles and bones hurt. I put up with this for about a month until I saw my rheummy and told him I had developed a terrible cough. He checked my ears, throat and lungs and they all checked out normal. He also did chest x-ray. so this lead him to the conclusion of MTX lung complications.

He also told me that this complication can occur at any time during the treatment on MTX. So one has to be very diligent while on MTX.

Thanks for the answer Toni. I was afraid of that. What I have is a

bit of a cough, non productive, and some soreness in the top of the

lungs and chaet - sore and tight - along with shingles all over my

torso - small but spread all over the front so will make sure I talk

to the rheumy today.

I'm glad to hear you recovered well - at least I hope you did. It's

hard to tell anyone's state of health from an email message :-)
