Hi Ann,

Not that one, Ann, but thanks. But remined me that Thurza has it

posted on an older issue of Synapse newsletter, so I took a peek. I am all

set.

It was helpful, as I picked up a few more words that are helpful to have in

the Glossary. (So thanks, , for the original post and thanks Thurza

for having it available).

Have a good one,

Kathi

Rick,

I'm aware of two treatments, " TURP " (trans-urethral resection of

the prostate), and green laser treatment. There may be others.

As I understand it, both involve inserting instruments through

the urethra (i.e., up the penis) into the prostate and then

either removing prostate tissue surgically using a technique that

someone once described as like a roto-rooter (the TURP), or using

a laser to burn out some tissue.

Neither one sounds like much fun, and they don't always work.

But they often do. I saw a posting from one guy who had three

TURP procedures. The third one did the trick for him, though I

think most guys get it done with just one treatment.

These are invasive treatments, so you want a surgeon that you

really trust. Personally, I'd want a guy with a lot of

experience doing it, and who struck me as a _very_ careful

person, who would work slowly and carefully and not rush through

it so he can get to lunch on time.

If you really need one of these procedures, as opposed to just

treatment with Flomax or one of the similar drugs, I suggest that

you find a TURP specialist and also a green laser specialist and

get opinions from both of them before making up your mind.

Good luck.

Ricko --

I suggest that you get a copy of:

" The Prostate Book: The Complete Guide to Overcoming Prostate Cancer,

Prostatitis, and BPH " -- Dr. Scardino

It's not very expensive, it's not difficult to read, and it goes into more

detail than any literature your doctor will give you. Scardino is the chairman

of Urology at MSKCC -- he knows what he's talking about.

It's 4 years old, but it should answer a lot of your questions about what

treatments are available.

I usually had my wife with me, when I visited the urologist. That way, we had

two pairs of ears to listen, and two mouths to ask questions. And we went in

with a written list of questions.

Maybe I was " the patient from hell " , but I was pretty well informed before

surgery.
