My rheumy advised me to take my folic adic 2 days before the methotrexate, something about the timing he said .

My old rheumy (;'( , always asked if I had a rash while he was

looking for one. Then he would listen to my lungs and heart. He said

my heart and lungs sounded great(?). (been a smoker for 30+ years)

Other than that he would just ask how I was.

I was just diagnosed with RA in June and just started seeing a Rheumy, he said he never lets his patients leave with out him listing to their heart and lungs.

I have asthma, so shortness of breath is something I have lived with for a long time,

not to mention that iit's aggravated by allergies.

I have a long history of broncitis and pnemonia in the past, as my immune system

has never been very good. Now it seems it's even worse. : (

1 mg of folic acid everyday.

Although I have only taken methotrexate for 5 weeks at 5 pills each, I called the

doctor Monday as I was having problems bending my wrists, and they upped my dosage to 6. I take them every Wednesday, and today I have a stomach ache, so I think I had better make a note of that for the doctor!

From what I've heard except in the United States Folic Acid is usually given once or twice a week. My RD prescribes 1 mg daily.

However I"ve been reading these posts about mtx and not taking the folic acid on the days that you take the mtx. That was news to me. > The docs have differing opinions on that one. My doc teaches at a university, so I consider her up on the latest...she has me taking folic acid every day.S

  • 3 weeks later...

I personally do well on just 1 mg a day but I have heard of people who take 5 mg daily plus Leucovorin once a week. I'm not aware of any problems with too much Folic Acid but make sure your doctor knows how much you are taking. God bless.

I know lots more has been posted, and I'll continue reading, but wanted to ask about folic acid: I take it every day, and I take 4 tabs (4mg; 2 in the morning and 2 at night). I take the methotrex. once weekly, and that's 20 mg I believe (8 tabs). I was taking only 2mg folic acid per day, but developed sores on my tongue and cheeks and the Dr. told me to up it. So far, so good. Does that sound like a lot to you all? That is also a question she always asked me, whether I'd had any mouth sores or not, as they can be a side-effect of the meth. I guess. I was glad she always asked, because when I got them I then knew they weren't just canker sores.Rie> My rheumy always asks if I have a cough - really it is a continuous > dry cough that would be a bad sign. I am still at 6 MTX a week, and noticed that my tongue and the roof of my mouth

are sore for a few days after taking it. No mouth sores so far.

I think the euphoria is from the MTX .... or maybe the prednisone.

(At my age, I don't need to do drugs, I just have to stand up really fast to get the same effect)
