I think it's up to the patient to tell the doctor about any changes in their health rather than the doctor asking leading questions. If the doctor asks about a symptom there are some people that will say they have that problem even if they were not aware of it before. On the other hand, the patient is not likely to bring up anything that is not real. God bless.

Subject: MTX follow-up

For those of you on MTX--what kinds of questions does your rheumy ask and what does she/he do in examination that are specific to that med?I wondered today if my rhemuy should be asking me about a cough or listening to my lungs...?Just upped my dose to 15 mg tonight. I'm hoping my luck with no nausea holds...Sierra

My rheumy always asks if I have a cough - really it is a continuous

dry cough that would be a bad sign. He has only once listened to my

breathing. I think the major thing is having your blood tests

regularly.

I read on a doctor site a bit of discussion about taking folic acid

the day before the MTX vs the day after. They generally agree that

the folic acid makes the MTX better tolerated but no studies have

been done on timing.

So I have been taking 1 extra folic the day before and the day after

and felt better this week (just began)

I had been taking 2mg (I think) per day for several months. My new

rheumy has cut it down to 1 but he's upped my MTX from 10mg per week

(was on 20mg for several months than was cut to 10mg) to

Methotrexate Lpp Inj/via 25MG/ML. (sorry I don't know how that

would translate to pill dosage).

My old rheumy (;'( , always asked if I had a rash while he was

looking for one. Then he would listen to my lungs and heart. He said

my heart and lungs sounded great(?). (been a smoker for 30+ years)

Other than that he would just ask how I was.

for my visits. That way he can keep an eye on my liver to make sure

that that's not getting screwed up with all of the mtx that I'm on.

He also asks if I have any concerns or if I am experiencing any side

effects to the drug.

However I " ve been reading these posts about mtx and not taking the

folic acid on the days that you take the mtx. That was news to me.

>

The docs have differing opinions on that one. My doc teaches at a

university, so I consider her up on the latest...she has me taking

folic acid every day.

  • 3 weeks later...

I know lots more has been posted, and I'll continue reading, but

wanted to ask about folic acid: I take it every day, and I take 4

tabs (4mg; 2 in the morning and 2 at night). I take the methotrex.

once weekly, and that's 20 mg I believe (8 tabs). I was taking only

2mg folic acid per day, but developed sores on my tongue and cheeks

and the Dr. told me to up it. So far, so good. Does that sound like

a lot to you all?

That is also a question she always asked me, whether I'd had any

mouth sores or not, as they can be a side-effect of the meth. I

guess. I was glad she always asked, because when I got them I then

knew they weren't just canker sores.
