I have a great deal of tolerance but in general we are not looking to alter anyones beliefs by posting in a RA group. Pris Well Pris, Religion and God is a very important part of my life and I don't think I would have gotten to the age of 37 without it. Unfortunately, the subject is always going to pop up in my daily conversations. As, I imagine it would with other people too. Guest guest Posted August 29, 2004 Report Share Posted August 29, 2004 I just want to weigh in on this topic of whether or not to mention God or religion on a non-religious list-serve. I am not personally a church-goer and would not describe myself as a Christian. I do, however, believe in the power of prayer, the concept of a higher being who I would call God and frankly don't see anything wrong in people referencing their beliefs in passing. For people who feel as though they need to express their perspective, I say great, I will read what they say, but generally don't dwell on it or take it personally. I think this group is very important to those of us who read it and serves as an excellent source of information and support. And if some people feel fit to pray for others, I say, Hey, we can all use whatever help we can get. Having seen other groups fight about stuff like this, I am of the Live and Let Live Society. Life is just too short to see offense in people's postings that really aren't meant to be offensive. In the words of some famous philosopher "can't we all just get along?" Another RA board I follow (Arthritis Insight) frequently shares spiritual messages, prayer requests, or support through prayer for others. On this board I usually end my posts with "God bless" but I would not hesitate to show support through prayer if I thought that was appropriate. I never meant to ignite such a controversy! I apologize to everyone who's been offended or upset by what I said, and also to everyone who isn't interested in posts about this matter. This is after all an RA group and while spirituality is part of healing, it's such a potentially inflammatory topic (ha, no pun intended) that it's better off discussed in a forum where people are expecting it. I didn't think all these people were going to respond to my post. It is very off-topic and I should have emailed privately. I think I underestimated how many people are here. I am sorry for that. It's never been a problem on the other groups I'm a member of. , I hope you aren't upset with me. Your harsh reply sounded like you thought I was attacking you or your religion, and what I meant to do was exactly the opposite. To my way of thinking this group's purpose is to help each other relieve our hurts. When you posted your comment that people run away from you when you talk to them about God, it sounded to me like you were feeling hurt by that. I just wanted to offer another opinion on what might be happening. The only purpose was to let you see someone else's viewpoint -- the viewpoint of one of those people you were talking about who run away when a Christian witnesses to us -- so you would know that we aren't running from YOU and we aren't running from God. I know how upsetting it can be to share with someone an experience that brings you such joy, and then to have that person ignore you or laugh at you. Sometimes pain isn't always physical. I tried to phrase my words very carefully but it appears that you feel I was offended by your faith, and that isn't even close to what I intended to come across with. I admit I'm a little hurt that the fact that I've only been here a few months accords me a lesser status than you, but I'll get over it. I would like to request that everyone please stop responding to this topic. It isn't appropriate for the list and if I'd known how many people would chime in I wouldn't have spoken up. It was a mistake on my part. Judging from the number of furious private emails I've received I really wish I hadn't said anything.
