There is an excellent commentary on the latest study

on the vexed subject of screening on The New Prostate CancerInfolink at http://tinyurl.com/GoteburgRead

 No doubt it will be the subject of much debate

because although it claims to demonstrate that screening does have the

potential to save lives, it also highlights the aspect of overtreatment. And, I

think these three points are worth bearing in mind

The Göteborg study: <snip> 44 men died of

prostate cancer in the screening group compared to 78 men in the control group.

<snip>

The Göteborg study: <snip> The total numbers of

deaths in the two arms of the study were almost identical, at 1,981 in the

screening group compared with 1,982 in the control group. <snip>

As Dr Willet Whitmore said all those years ago:  Growing

old is invariably fatal while prostate cancer is only sometimes so.

All the best

Prostate men need enlightening, not frightening

Terry Herbert - diagnosed in 1996 and still going

strong
