The rest of this list has lived every moment of my efforts to get Tim to drink

anything except breast milk from the source, so I won't give you the whole

tedious story... but in a nutshell I started expressing when he was about 2

months old and got into a routine when he was 3 or 4 months of giving him EBM in

a bottle every bedtime. Every so often I thought we had it cracked - but then

he'd refuse. The best suggestion I had from this list was not to worry -

perhaps he just wasn't thirsty when he refused the bottle! At 7 months (after

some concerted bottle refusing) I went on to the spouty beaker thingy and also

started mixing EBM and formula to get him used to the taste of formula (I also

gave him formula on his cereal in the mornings for the same reason), gradually

altering the mix till it was all formula. At least, I think this was how I did

things. I might have started mixing in formula before going on to the beaker.

Anyway, the gist of this message is: by 8 months I was just breastfeeding Tim

on waking and before bed (and if he woke in the night) and offering him formula

from a beaker during the day - once mid-morning and once mid-afternoon. Over

the last 4 months I have discovered that there's no point in offering him a

drink too early as he just won't take it - so, as he has his main sleep before

lunch I give him a beaker when he wakes up just before his lunch, and I give him

the second drink at about 5 pm, just before tea. I never make up more than 7 fl

oz of formula now and I still usually end up throwing away at least 2 oz. He

isn't dehydrated, he's developing well - he just isn't a thirsty baby! He gets

about 1/4 pint milk on his cereal for breakfast, often has yoghurt/from frais

for pudding and sometimes has other dairy produce as well during the day, and at

nursery he has a few sips of water mid-morning and with his meals. He certainly

doesn't breastfeed all evening and night to make up for it either.

I s'pose I'm just saying - don't worry! (certainly not at this time of year

and living in the Hebrides!)

Annelise,

Thanks!!!!

I've given up on the drinking formula thing for now -

drinks

a whole beaker of water for her lunch, so she's getting the fluid she

needs.

Sounds like I'm having an easier time of it than you did !
