Treatment Plan

Just wanted to give you a quick update on what we've decided to go with

regarding my husband's treatment plan. After meeting with two surgeons and a

radiologist, we met with a surgeon from Fox Chase.

As I had indicated in one of my earlier posts, the first surgeon completely

dismissed the idea of performing a biopsy of the lymph nodes, which concerned

me. He also said that while doing the nerve sparing technique was high risk, he

highly recommended it. The second probably would not have either because per

the Partin Tables, there's a 1% change of lymph node involvement, he said he

would make the decision on nerve sparing during the surgery based on the

appearance of the prostate. The Fox Chase doctor most definitely biopsies the

lymph nodes as well as performs biopsies of the surrounding tissue of the

prostate during the surgery to determine how much she needs to remove. Her main

objective is to get all the cancer, which is exactly what we wanted to hear.

We liked her and felt very comfortable with her. She's done about a 1,000 or

more of the surgeries, so we feel she has a good amount of experience. The

surgery is scheduled for September 28th. In the mean time, we're just trying to

keep busy, stay positive, and keep enjoying life :)

Hope all is well with everyone.

Sandy

Sandy,

Two of my friends and I have all had surgery in the past 6 months, all at different hospitals, two robotic and one open, and in every case the lymph nodes were biopsied. All were negative, and knowing that was a real comfort. My Gleason was 7 (3+4), and after pathology the cancer was upgraded to T2c. Remind your husband about the expected incontinence. The first month is usually the worst, but in the case of all three of us it began to improve rapidly after that. The ED is a different matter, at leat in my case, but it's only 7 months, so I'm hopeful.
