Very interesting. I'm 4+ weeks out from my TURP and that seems to have caused enough trauma, but combining the two while the patient is out apparently makes sense. I had a TUMT as an alternative to the Green Light laser a year ago.

Good luck to you and your husband. It's amazing how much technology exists to treat PCa and BPH, more and more just since I was diagnosed and started following it.

And good luck to all the members of this club we never intended to join. Don't ever lose hope.

Info About Combining TURP with Greenlight for Prostate Surgery

Hi, I wrote earlier about my husband having prostate surgery and that his urologist was going to use Greenlight for part of the surgery and TURP for part of it (on the enlarged median lobe). I found some info on that:

From:

http://www.urocentersc.com/conditions/bph/greenlight-pvp/

"In some cases the urologist may choose to combine the TURP and PVP. Some men have prostate enlargement that projects upward into the bladder, called a medial lobe of the prostate. This part of the prostate is easier and quicker to remove with TURP than with PVP, so in some cases we may use the traditional TURP to remove part of the prostate, and use the PVP laser to remove the rest."

Anyway, just passing this along.

My husband's urologist had him on drugs to reduce the prostate size, and overall, the prostate did reduce significantly, but unfortunately, the median (or medial - I've seen it both ways) lobe, is still causing a bad obstruction.

From the National Association for Continence:

http://www.nafc.org/index.php?page=enlarged-prostate

"The portion of the prostate gland that is enlarged can be very significant; for example, enlargement involving the median lobe is more likely to be associated with more severe symptoms. In the case of prostates, just as in real estate, location matters most."
