Latest I've seen:

The Web site for POM pomegranate juice makes some pretty extreme claims,

strongly implying that the juice can prevent or help treat diseases like cancer,

hypertension, diabetes, and even erectile dysfunction. Now, the Food and Drug

Administration has said such claims are misleading and are not allowed on food

products, according to a report in The New York Times. If POM wants to make such

claims, the FDA stated, it will have to be regulated as a drug.

But then there's this:

Results: The study was fully accrued after efficacy criteria were met. There

were no serious adverse events reported and the treatment was well tolerated.

Mean PSA doubling time significantly increased with treatment from a mean of 15

months at baseline to 54 months posttreatment (P < 0.001). In vitro assays

comparing pretreatment and posttreatment patient serum on the growth of LNCaP

showed a 12% decrease in cell proliferation and a 17% increase in apoptosis (P =

0.0048 and 0.0004, respectively), a 23% increase in serum nitric oxide (P =

0.0085), and significant (P < 0.02) reductions in oxidative state and

sensitivity to oxidation of serum lipids after versus before pomegranate juice

consumption.

Conclusions: We report the first clinical trial of pomegranate juice in patients

with prostate cancer. The statistically significant prolongation of PSA doubling

time, coupled with corresponding laboratory effects on prostate cancer in vitro

cell proliferation and apoptosis as well as oxidative stress, warrant further

testing in a placebo-controlled study.

And there's a gov. study currently in progress:

http://clinicaltrials.gov/show/NCT00336934

Since I got a detectable PSA reading in May I've started drinking 6 oz of juice

daily with a softgel capsule of extract. First recheck showed a small decrease -

which may mean nothing at this point. Figure nothing to lose but a dollar or so

a day.

Do you mean the FDA lawsuit against POM described here:

http://tinyurl.com/2adceca

It was written-up in the Wall St Journal last week.

Bob,

My oncologist and urologists both believe that moderate intake of foods that are both high in quality and high in anti-oxidents is especially helpful to not only maintain basic health, but to enhance the body's ability to fight for its own preservation.

Upon surgery 4.5 yrs ago, the surgeon advised me that 50% of my continued recovery would rest upon my diet.

Hope this is helpful.

Dan,

Over the years since I developed a

personal interest in prostate cancer there have been many substances and juices

and teas and potions for which claims are made. They come into fashion and

they go out of fashion. One thing they have in common is that there is never

any clear scientific evidence of their efficacy. The other thing is that the

initial studies and PR releases are usually paid for by the producers.

A poster on my Yana site had a view on pomegranate

juice some years back – here it is http://www.yananow.net/troopc.htm#cduj

– you’ll see he ends with some advice <snip> Take yer pick -

but don't forget your pomegranate juice futures - it could be the next big

thing.<snip> I have seen a couple of articles about the value of mangoes

in fighting prostate cancer so that might be some other futures to consider

investing in.

All the best

To All

If it wasn't for pomegranate extract I would be dead or chemically castrated. I have advanced prostate cancer and in July 2006 when I had my recurrence it was pomegranate extract that reversed my psa. There are not any large number studies because Big Pharma won't study food or supplements, there is no money in it for them and they see it as competition.

Today I have my life back due to pomegranate extract. The UCLA study is getting all this negative press because Pom L paid them 34 million to do it. What you are all forgetting are the results. To increase PSDT from 14 months to 54 months is huge. Personally I would rather die than be chemically castrated.

Hi Dan,

Your thoughts on chemical castration are similar to mine! Can I ask what dose of pomegranate supplements you are taking? I started taking 2 X 250mg tablets daily back in May when my PSA sarted to rise 17months after IGRT. I've just started to harvest the (small) crop from my own tree so am also having one fresh pom per day.

I take 500mg a day, supposedly it is the equivalent of eating 30 pomegranates a day. It also has turmeric, lypocene and rose hips with 23mg of antioxident support.

Hi Dan,

Thanks for prompt reply. I also take turmeric but haven't seen the combo, can you tell me the brand please? I currently get mine from justvitamins.co.uk

Thanks,

Chris

There are not any large number studies because Big Pharma won't study food or supplements, there is no money in it for them and they see it as competition.Don't blame Big Pharma alone. The "nutriceutical" and diet-supplement makers in the US sell (if I remember right) _tens of billions of dollars_ of product every year. Why not use some of that revenue to fund _double-blind_, _placebo-controlled_ studies of their effectiveness? Could it be that the manufacturers are afraid that their products don't work?I know of one guy -- Dean Ornish -- who said:. . . "But nobody will ever fund good studies of simple "diet-and-exercise" programs."and was challenged with:. . . "You've made millions of dollars off your books. Why don't _you_ fund one?"And he did. There's still an open question about the _long-term_ effectiveness of such programs, but Ornish's study showed pretty clearly that his program was effective.POM could do the same, but (according to the FDA) it hasn't. > > Subject: Pomegranate Juice> To: ProstateCancerSupport > Cc: "Bob Gonsalves Sr." bob.gail@...> Date: Sunday, October 10, 2010, 1:53 AM> > > >  Hi folks,> >  Has anyone read the latest news on Pomegranate Juice?> >  I've been hearing some negative things, so I thought I would pose the question here.> > >  Thanks for your time, > >  BOB G> > ------------------------------------>

You're probably right, but the articles I've seen on the FDA's action against

POM weren't targeted toward whether the Pomegranate juice and extracts had any

effectiveness against any disease but the suit says their claims are making its

pomegranate juice into an unapproved new drug.
