Guest guest
Allowing a drug to be used for A particular purpose and recommending it be used for that purpose are two very different things. Neither Finasteride or Adovart are being removed from the market. All that has happened is that the FDA, not being the ship of fools that they have been so often in the past, have decided not to stick their collective necks in the noose and actually recommend that these drugs be used by men who have neither Prostate cancer or BPH, yet. With the legacy of the female hormone replacement disaster fresh in their minds, it did not take much insight to know which way they would rule. Tens of thousands of women, maybe millions of women were directly harmed by an FDA approved hormone replacment protocol experiment that lasted quarter of a century. I seriously doubt that the FDA is looking for a repeat of that colossal mistake. The litigation when untoward side effects begin to emerge with long term use would swamp the courts and I don't believe that the current crop of FDA employees fancy spending their retirement testifying at congressional hearings and perhaps being brought up on charges. Guest guest
Off-label use is not illegal, unethical or uncommon. In 20 years as a practicing PA, I did it often, especially for AIDS patients, and had many a battle with Medicaid pharmacists because of it. Some drugs we prescribed were chosen for what were considered their side-effects, such as Megace and Marinol as appetite stimulants.
