Guest guest
I thought vicodan was in same family of meds as morphine, or am I wrong? My doc says codeine is less likely to cause nausea etc. than percocett. Guest guest
Dear J: Yes, codeine, morphine, darvocet, vicoden, and percocet are all in that family. They are all different combinations. Any pain med ending with a 'dan ore den' (percodan) is mixed with aspirin and any drug ending it 'cet' (darvocet and percocet) are mixed with acetaminophen. Guest guest
, I thought Vicodan was morphine based also. However, when I was in Switzerland I had a lithotripsy. They aren't into painkillers and anesthetics there unless you scream and threaten. If you don't know what a lithotripsy is, you are jolted with what feels like 10,000 volts of lightning. The objective is to fragment a kidney stone by using a beam of some kind that is harmless to soft tissue. When I'd reach the point where I was ready to climb the walls, a nurse would release an infusion of painkiller into my IV. I was sick for almost an entire day after the procedure with violent vomiting and nausea so I couldn't even turn my head. Since almost none of the medical personnel could speak English and my German is lousy, I couldn't ask what was going on. Later, when I had a lithotripsy that worked in the US (the Swiss one failed) my American doctor told me that they undoubtedly gave me pure morphine. He told me to always tell medical personnel that I have a severe reaction to morphine. He didn't use it and I wasn't remotely sick when the procedure was repeated in the US. I had a similar reaction to the IV painkillers I was given post hysterectomy in Seattle. I actually chose to go without painkillers rather than deal with the nausea. Whatever meds they gave me when I went home (I think it was Roxicet) also made me sick. Vicoden, however, causes me no pain at all. Maybe there's something in Vicoden that offsets the nausea causing effects of the drug. I'm very, very cautious now about pain killers but since I've been warning doctors, I haven't had a big problem. Unfortunately I don't always remember to say something. I think morphine allergy is now in my medical records, but they still prescribe Vicoden. Take care, Geri

Guest guest
Yes, it's one of the side effects of the narcotic in Vicodin & Lortab. I saw a GI doc earlier this year, and as we reviewed my medications, she didn't know anything about Arava, and I mentioned that a side effect was diarrhea. Then she looked through my list of other meds, and basically every one of them has constipation as a side effect. I think they're balancing each other out most of the time! Guest guest
It sounds like you are addicted to them which is very common because you need them to take away the pain. But all your symptoms of the being bitchy and to feel normal again sounds like you are addicted to them. Its hard to deal with the pain because everyone cant tolerate the same meds to take the pain away. You may need Vicodan where I might not be able to take that and need morphine. I cant stand the upset stomach after being on meds for so long but then if I stop I will be in a lot of pain. Try explaining that to your Doc and he will think you are nuts LOL Vicodan I am taking Vicodan for my chronic back pain. I tried to use Embedda, which is a sustained release pain killer, but it made me terribly sick to my stomach, and all I wanted to do is sleep all day...(ugh) My worse pain comes during the night with my hips, legs and groin, its as if no matter which position I choose to sleep, I will awaken in pain from lying on that side....Vicodan is a very, very addictive drug...I got addicted to it 10 yrs ago when my back problems started, I was able to get off them, but it was not easy. I know that I have to take something for the pain and I have tried " other " options/pain control, ie: prescriptions pain meds, chiropractic care, PT, injections, you name it!! Vicodan is the only med that takes the pain away for at least 5-6 hours, I am free of the pain. I take the 7.5 mg. once when I get up in the morning (which is my worse pain) and once again at 5pm. By the time 5pm gets around I am more fatigued, tired, cranky, bitchy......than I am in pain, so I take one just to feel " normal " again....this is what is scaring me....am I taking the second dose for the pain? or to feel normal again... I don't know....has anyone here taken this drug? with the same crash that I get when it wears off? Im sorry for rambling, but I just wanted you all to get a picture of what Im talking about....and opinions would be greatly appreciated...Thank you!!! Guest guest
Vicodin is a medication that contains Tylenol, you should ask your Doctor to get you into something else, that does not contain Tylenol, since Tylenol has been proven to damage your liver, so why take chances? On your comment about taking Vicodin to " feel normal " .... It sounds to me like you are abusing Vicodin, and that even though your pain might be real, the medication is having an effect on you that should not be happening. People that are in chronic pain do not take take their meds to " feel normal " and not cranky, we take our meds because we need to alleviate our pain, and because our medications allow us to get out of bed and function. Sounds like you need Vicodin not for pain, but for mood swings, so if that is the case, you need talk to your Doctor about it and maybe try to get into a Suboxone program. Most people on chronic pain are dependant on their medications, but not addicted, to me it sounds like you have an addiction to Vicodin and it is time to take care of it. Good luck, > > I am taking Vicodan for my chronic back pain. Guest guest
Hi, I take vicoden at the same dosage 3 times a day for pain and it does sound like you are addicted like the others sais, best to see a doctor. I might get cranky when it wears off but it is from the pain not becasue I need to take another one. It just relieves my pain somewhat and nothing else like mood etc. I think if people truley take it for pain it does its job and does not make you feel good.
