I had a radical prostatectomy with lymph nodes last September and since then have had total ED. Yes, it's been very difficult. I'm not experiencing rage though, just depression. Viagra and Levitra have not helped.

I have an appointment the first of May with my urologist/surgeon, and I want to talk to him about Trimax. Exactly what is it? Is it something I can get from my local pharmacist? With a written prescription, of course. Has anyone had their insurance company pay for the drug or will I have to go the total cost of it + the syringes? How much does it cost? I read somewhere on the Internet that the drug has to be kept in the refrigerator. Correct? How long is it good for?

Obviously, I want to know as much as possible about the drug (and what I'm getting into) before my May appointment.

Thanks.

Need help in trying to deal withe rage toward myself. To: ProstateCancerSupport Date: Wednesday, April 20, 2011, 2:13 PM

I have had my prostate removed in 2007 (due to climbing count of P.S.A.).Since then I feel lucky that at this point I am cancer free, but I am no longer a complete male. And so I live with rage directed at myself. I am reaching out to understand how best to deal with this.

Pat,

Trimix costs me $75 for a three-month supply. It has to be specially mixed so I can't get it at my local pharmacy, but there is one compounding pharmacy not too far from me that prepares it for me. So far they have provided the syringes for free, but I understand they don 't cost much. I haven't tried to get Medicare to pay for it because the cost seems so little versus Viagra. BTW, so far I have been using it twice a week, with excellent results, and I still had some left over, so I could use it more often, if I desired. Yes, it has to be refrigerated, and it is good for three months. I should add that you may need a little foreplay to achieve a full erection, but since the effect usually lasts at least two hours in my case, that just makes the whole experience more normal.

How many times a week can you use Trimax? Thanks Dick dick@... Dick,

My uro said I could use it three times a week, but I find twice a week is more than satisfactory (I'm 69, not a young stud). There is a Trimix website that has a lot of info, and check out the video by Dr. Mulhall of Memorial Sloan Kettering on the MSK website. He's a great believer in Trimix as soon as six weeks after surgery.

BTW, adding to what said about filling your own syringes, I fill mine because I found the standard 0.1cc was not enough to achieve a full erection. I use 0.13cc.

Larry, I haven't had what iIwould call discomfort. I do get a sensation of having a very firm erection that has been held too long, even when it's not very firm. A few minutes of romantic foreplay fixes the lack of firmness and the end result is wonderful. Perhaps varying the dosage with the Trimix might solve the discomfort problem for you. Is it possible to vary the muse dosage? I had to increase the Trimix dosage to 0.13cc from the 0.1 my uro started with to get a really satisfactory result.

My problem with the injections is it is supposed to be the same / similar medication as Muse, the suppository. All it really does for me is give me an hour to two hours of discomfort and a slightly inflated penis. The discomfort is enough to make it difficult to even think about using it. I don’t know if the injections will be any better, for me at least.

Larry --

You have to distinguish MUSE from injections.

MUSE has a " rejection rate " of something around 80% of the men who try it. Your

reaction to it is typical.

The same active ingredient (prostaglandin) is called " Caverject " when injected

(in a much lower dose than MUSE carries). It has a much lower " rejection rate "

than MUSE, and it's more effective for most men. So it's worth trying. It's

also the only injectable which is FDA-approved for ED.

Some men (including me) experience a dull ache / pain with it.

For those men, the alternatives are:

1. Bimix -- two chemicals which are _not_ prostaglandin. Bimix is pain-free,

but it's not effective for everyone.

2. Trimix -- Bimix, with a _little bit_ of prostaglandin added. Trimix is

often effective for men for whom bimix doesn't work. And the reduced

prostaglandin makes it less likely to cause pain than Caverject.

There's a reasonable discussion of this (and a lot of other stuff) in the USTOO

white paper:

http://www.ustoo.org/PDFs/Injection.pdf

and if you Google " albaugh algorithm " you'll find Albaugh's paper on

who should use which drugs.

This is not rocket science. But either you, or your urologist, has to know what

the alternatives are, and how to navigate among them.
