I would like Mr. to explain what this is about.

Consider the following hypothetical scenario:

A drug company is promoting a bisphosphonate drug for use with bone

metastases. The drug costs $10,000 per year, mostly paid for by

Medicare or insurance. It has some effect on bone though no one

is exactly sure whether that effect is positive or not, or what

percentage of patients actually benefit. The company hires a

marketing company to rent a room and recruit patients to come to

a " research " study.

The marketers recruit 50 men. They are paid $100 each or $5,000

total. The marketers are paid $5,000 for their recruiting. In

addition, the room costs $1,000.

A drug company salesmen appears at the meeting. He presents a

slick video in which smiling patients talk about how they're

playing tennis again. There are also a number of beautifully

produced Powerpoint slides showing animations of bone being

remodeled and strengthened by the drug. The salesman gets $2,000

and the people producing the video and slides get some.

Total drug company outlay is perhaps $15,000.

Ten patients are recruited at the meeting to try the drug for two

years. The total cost of their drugs is $200,000.

It's a pretty sweet deal for the drug company, the marketing

company, and the salesman. It's even sweeter if the marketers

recruit 100 patients, or 500 patients, and the salesman sells

drugs to 20 or 50 patients instead of 10. " Incentives " are

provided to increase payments to the marketers and the salesman

for each man that attends and each man that buys the product.

But do the patients actually benefit?

I may be cynical but I think cynicism is justified. Nobody hires

market research companies or pays $100 each to participants

unless they plan to make good profits on the deal. I think Mr.

needs to explain himself and explain this " research

study " and I strongly urge him to do so.

If Mr. fails to reply to the group, or fails to fully

explain what this is about, then everyone should judge his

credibility accordingly.

In the meantime, I also strongly urge anyone who participates in

the " study " to be on the alert and keep a strong hold on your

wallets and your insurance cards.
