Guest guest
Jewls: Can you page your doctor? My endo told me he really wanted to know right away if I got a rash. Mine turned out to be allergy to hair dye, but he wanted to keep an eye on it in case it was a reaction to the meds. He put me on Benadryl for itch relief. Good luck. Guest guest
Erk! Yes! I got hives from the Tapazole, too. You'll need to get an antihistamine to make them go away. And stop taking the Tapazole. That's what my doctor told me, anyway. Then she put me on PTU, because even though it's only hives, she said that could be the start of other allergic reactions to the Tapazole. Not to scare you! Maybe you've got poison ivy or something else? Anyway, get ahold of your doc! Or *a* doctor. Or talk to a pharmacist...they could definitely help. Guest guest
Just to ammend my post.....I shouldn't tell you to stop taking your meds! What am I thinking! Sheesh. However, my doctor stressed that, once I got the hives, I was to take no more. That's all. Sorry for the faux pas. Kari >And stop taking the Tapazole. That's what my doctor told me, anyway. Guest guest
Jewls, If I'm remembering correctly, hives and itching are indeed side effects of atds. . . hives and itching also can come from Graves. I'd call your endo right away and report it. I had hives while hyper and found immense, permanent relief with acupuncture. . . . sorry so short, kids are calling, It's gonna drive me CRAZY!!! > Hi everyone, > > Since yesterday afternoon, I've been itching, itching, itching.....I broke > out in hives last night.....my question is this. Guest guest
Jewls, I found out I was allergic to Tapazole 2 days ago. From what I understand this reaction is somewhat common. The website for Tapazole says that a mild skin rash and itching is not dangerous but should reported to your doctor if it becomes bothersome (what a joke, I was itching like crazy! It looked like a bad sunburn also). I think you started taking Tapazole at the same time I did, which was 3/21/2000. From my experience , it usually takes at least a week or two to develop a rash from an allergen. Call you doctor! Mine switched me to PTU. For some reason less people have a allergic reaction to PTU. But my question is, why don't doctor try PTU first, if Tapazole causes a bunch of itchiness! You probably know that the good news is that PTU is much less expensive than Tapazole. Good luck, e It's gonna drive me CRAZY!!! > Hi everyone, > > Since yesterday afternoon, I've been itching, itching, itching.....I broke > out in hives last night.....my question is this. Guest guest
I think that's why they call it an idiosyncratic reaction. Jewls, don't just assume you are allergic to the meds, Grave's can also bring out any allergic inclinations you may have - for example, turned out I was allergic to hair dye, which I used the same time I started PTU. Guest guest
I don't belive that it is true or proven or even a common medical hypothesis that if you get hives or itch while on ATDs that it is the beginning of more serious response. And keep in mind that one of the common symptoms of graves is being hot and itchy. I passed though some very strong itch welt attacks, remained on the tapazole, and as my thyroid levels stabilized, all that passed. It is hard terrain to in which to discern what is gong on some times..first everything we feel is now explained by the diagnosis of GD then everything lands on our treatments...and it could be so or not. Hang in there friends....Jeannette

My hives showed three weeks after I'd started on the Tapazole. And that was the only side-effect! It had been working so well, until that point. The PTU's working absolutely fine, too, though. ~kari

I left a message with the receptionist who called the dr filling in for mine. I have to call them on Thursday, and she's putting me on something else, my guess is PTU, but we'll see. Not to disagree with your opinion in any way...but that's what I was told by my doctor, that the hives could be an early indication of bad reactions to the Tap, and that worse things might've happened if I kept taking it. Basically, that the hives could've just been the first thing that happened..with more agonies to follow. She's a cautious lady. That's what she told me, and I'm certainly willing to believe her! I'm much more happy on the PTU...without those durn hives. I've been reaction-free on PTU for over six months now! >And keep in mind that one of the common symptoms of graves is being hot and itchy. I had that itchy-all-over thing, for about a week, very mildly (before the hives episode). But it went away quickly and hasn't returned. I've never had the feeling overly hot part of the disease. ~kari
