Guest guest
Rudy, and a couple of others were on 20/20 or 60 Minutes a year or so ago and they focused on the importance of early detection and that being the key to survival. They all touched(briefly)on their treatment choices and how they beat the monster but none of them even mentioned anything about any sexual or urinary side effects. That's part of the reason why there is such a difference between the way breast cancer and prostate cancer gets media coverage. Until we(society)drag this disease up to the podium and all the men shed their macho images and talk openly about their battles and how they suffer from it's treatment issues, prostate cancer will never get the front page coverage that breast cancer gets. Guest guest
I so agree. Let's get a group together that will go in front of SOME medical board, and political board, that really tells of the DEVASTATION this disease can bring. As I stated once before, when my husband was going through the informative stages of trying to find out what to do with his early detection of PC....NO ONE came forward that had problems...This only happened after his surgery, and then the many men came out of the wood work indicating the problems they had, and still do! And women...they are silent too, about the stress and impact this has on their married life! Yes, we learn to live a different sexual life, and it can become a more intimate and "holy" affair.....but in the same sense, it does not come without a price! Emotionally, physically, and spiritually...one is challenged, and for me, my faith and hope in a power greater than myself or the "medical community" has been my life saver! Guest guest
hello, timely post. I mentioned in my first post of April 14, we are in the process of looking at and choosing an option. we recently had an appointment with the urologist and while waiting in the office with several others, noted the place smelled like urine; and there were two women quietly talking to each other about the effect it has had on their lives too. the urologist recommends watchful waiting with monthly PSA tests, and/or surgery. he mentioned problems associated with other forms of treatment, but said nothing about any problems with surgery, his specialty ... hmmmm. he agreed to refer us to a radiation oncologist for consultation so we’re waiting for that appt. now. The local support group meets next week so we will be attending for the first time, hoping some will come forward and share the problems they had. Rob’s scores: Gleason 4+3 = 7. Stage T2b. PSA February 7.3 PSA March 7.7 PSA April 6.4 Bone scan & chest x-ray clear. Renal ultrasound booked. Guest guest
Carol, Luckily, my urologists (two at different hospitals) both mentioned the possible side effects of all the treatments, including surgery, and the two radiation oncologists I consulted also mentioned the possible side effects of all the treatments. But even before my first consultations I had been on the Prostate Cancer Research Institite (PCRI) website and read about them. PCRI has a great series of articles for the newly diagnosed patient. If he hasn't already done so, have Rob read them, certainly before he makes his treatment decision. The outcome seems to depend on a combination of the stage of the disease, the treatment chosen, the skill of the doctor providing the treatment, and the patient's own anatomical makeup. What works for one might not work for another. I chose robotic surgery by a surgeon who had done several hundred such surgeries, and I have been very happy -- minor in continence for about 12 wweks, and ED for the past 15 months which Trimix injections overcome, and which appears to be (very) slowly improving anyway. But another patient with the exact same scores might have had a very different outcome with the same surgeon because his physical structure might be different. I have friends who have had IMRT and have had no problems, and others who have had rectal problems. Read the stories of the outcomes of all the treatments on Yananow and you will see there is no right answer and no wrong answer. Guest guest
We will need to think on this...and go about it smartly! ( Is there such a word?) However, Billboards do not seem like such a bad idea.!!To: ProstateCancerSupport Sent: Sun, May 1, 2011 12:21:21 PMSubject: Re: 's Suggestion !
