Obviously, with no prostate to protect from bruising which causes the irritation that stimulate PSA output, there is nothing special that needs to be done or can be done to prevent false positives!Louis. . . To: ProstateCancerSupport Sent: Thu, January 20, 2011 7:15:33 PMSubject: Time for my 9yr.Checkup !

Greetings from Houston,Texas !

Feb.7, 2011, I go in for the results of the PSA test which I will do on the 3rd. . Have been "Non-Detectable" since August 2002, I believe.

What are the rules of what NOT to do before one has the blood drawn for the test?

Actually, Louis.........my prostate is still there. I had seven weeks of daily external radiation, then 126 seeds were implanted. That was in the first qtr.of 2001.

Not sure how that factor's into things but my Urologist has never told me one way or the other about activities 48-Hr.prior to having the blood drawn.

In the words of my ex-Navy oncologist, " cool your jets " for the week prior (i.e.

no sex); avoid exercise that might aggravate the gland (e.g. running, bike

riding) - for me this means I stop my daily routine of exercising on an

elliptical, no swimming and no sit-ups/curls or similar calisthenics. In my case

I also stop daily ED drugs and Flomax for 3 days prior.

The ACS guidelines say that ejaculation and cycling prior to PSA test are two

activities that can raise the level, as well as special conditions such as

prostate massage, biopsy, or infection. They also mention bed rest prior to

test as helping reduce it. Good luck!

I would be interested in hearing your conditions at diagnosis as I am

considering seeds right now and live in Houston.

Then the usual precautions about bicycling, vigorous exercise and any other activity that puts pressure on the prostate should be avoided until the blood is drawn and results come back (waiting for the results to come back is done in case a retest is needed) should be taken.Louis. . . . Hi Joe !

I can't find my notes, but my PSA was 4.7. Urologist gave me anti-biotics initially to see if that would correct the PSA, but it didn't. Biopsy was done in his office and "Yep...I had it". Because of my heart attack back in 1996, my cardiologist would not sign off on surgery (and I still value his opinion....he saved my life in the ER). I chose the external radiation, then two weeks off, then they planted 126 Seeds. That was in the first quarter of 2001. My first follow up was on, Sept.11, 2001 (yeah, that day). My PSA was 0.3, six months later it was O.1, six months later it was 0.2, then it hung around at 0.2 for about two years, then dropped off to 0.01, where it has remained.

You really need a Radiation Oncologist who has a number of succesful "Seedings" under his belt and perferably trained at the "Mecca" in Seattle,Washington....and kept up to date on the latest procedures.

Who you using for your Urologist here in Houston?

!

Thanks for the reply. My case sounds similar: PSA=5.5 and had risen fairly

fast in last 2 years. Biopsy showed 6/12 cores positive with three Gleason 7

scores. I was not good for surgery due to previous abdominal surgeries and

complications.

I was hoping for seeds alone but the literature seems to recommend combination

like you had for intermediate-aggressive PCa. I am getting diagnostic tests now

to get the radiation oncologist's recommendation. I am seeing Dr. Neal Sherman,

Texas Oncology, who is said to have done more seedings than any in Houston. He

uses the newer Cesium seeds and seems extremely capable. I also met with a

medical oncologist who confirmed seeding as a good alternative for me.

Who did you use? Your outcome sounds excellent. Congratulations!

Joe,

Not but I thought I would piggy-back on this thread regarding a doctor in

Houston others on this board have mentioned back when I was making a decision on

treatment. At the time he ran Texas Cancer Clinic in San , but he is now

in Houston. He did my seeding and I was/am extremely pleased. For those who may

not have caught up with the move, here are his 'particulars':

Dr. Bradley Prestidge

Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital

Department of Radiation Oncology

Actually it was my oncologist, not me, who was ex-military. I made a grievous

mistake by likely insulting members of two branches of the service - he is

ex-Air Force, not ex-Navy. :-)

I think you probably know(?) him - Dr. Bradley Prestidge recently relocated here

from San .
