Guest guest
Ok is it just me or does it seem as though more boys are born with both feet clubbed while most girls only seem to have one. Is there a known reason for this?I have read club foot is more common in boys than girls. If anyone knows why please let me know. > Carla & Kelli edd 3/14/01 I don't think anyone knows the reason. I even asked Dr. P about this. It is interesting that you notice that, though. I know twice as many boys as girls get clubfoot so isn't it interesting if clubfoot boys also have twice as many clubbed feet as girls (now try to say that three times fast). Guest guest
Hello Carla, My name is Lori Stime and I haven't been around much these days, but I just had to comment on this observation, although I cannot answer the question as to " why? " clubfoot occurs more in boys. My father was born with uni-lateral clubfoot. My daughter was born with bi-lateral clubfeet. So we are not in the most common category and I've always thought that was kinda weird. It would be interesting to do a poll on this..... , could you set up a poll asking the sex of the child affected and wether they had uni/bi-lateral clubfoot??? Guest guest
Lori, Great idea, I'd like to see the results in a poll too.... Guest guest
This is what you learn in orthopaedic training: clubfoot is more common in boys and is generally bilateral in 50% of cases (boys and girls). There are published statistics about recurrence rate (which I always have to look up) which demonstrate that although it is less likely to have a daughter with (or be a girl with) a clubfoot, if this happens the recurrence risk is higher than if you have a son with (or are a boy with) a clubfoot. In general clubfoot is described as " multifactorial " inheritance - you need many genes to have a clubfoot is my simple way of thinking of it (although there are the unusual families that have an " autosomal dominant " pattern of inheritance and a 50% chance of a clubfoot with each child). Confused yet? I think of it as follows: if you are a girl, you need more CF genes to be born with a clubfoot (therefore less common in females), however if you are a female with a clubfoot, it is more likely for your relatives (siblings, your own children) to have a CF. If there are any geneticists in the crowd they may laugh me out of the hall with my " surgeon " explanations. son
