Guest guest
Bobby Bowden is getting paid to talk about his prostate cancer by several pharmaceutical companies and other organizations....he would be much more credible and inspiring if he talked about his prostate cancer without using it for personal gain. Guest guest
Darryl, I have to say I don’t get the point of your post. Where do you draw the line between funding and donations and personal gain? I don’t have the answer to that. When we set up the YANA – You Are Not Alone Now at http://www.yananow.org site, one of the things we decided was that we would fund the site ourselves so that we were beholden to no one: so that no one could apply pressure to provide any spun message. Over time, individuals offered to contribute to the costs of running the site and printing my booklet which I send free of charge to anyone who wants it. and I accepted those donations gratefully – I even received a large donation of $100 from Oppenheimer when he fond I mentioned his lab as an expert pathologist BUT……. If one of the large PCa related organizations, most of which are funded in some way by the pharmaceutical industry was to offer me a couple of business class tickets to the US plus expenses plus a small honorarium to be a guest speaker at a meeting (hint, hint), why I might just be tempted to take that bribeJ We all have our prices – and I have thirteen States to visit before I clock up a visit to each State in the USA and tick that off my Bucket List. I don’t know that would be a wicked thing to do – at least I’d be able to get a message out to some men who might find it helpful. I don’t know (or really care) how you fund your Malecare site because it does such a good job – but I’m guessing part of the income is from the advertisements that run on the site, many of which are, unsurprisingly, “….pharmaceutical companies and other organizations…” Pot and kettle comes to mindJ All the best Prostate men need enlightening, not frightening Terry Herbert - diagnosed in 1996 and still going strong Read A Strange Place for unbiased information at http://www.yananow.org/StrangePlace/index.html From: ProstateCancerSupport [mailto:ProstateCancerSupport ] On Behalf Of Darryl Mitteldorf Sent: Sunday, 25 September 2011 1:21 AM To: ProstateCancerSupport Subject: Re: Bobby Bowden and prostate cancer Bobby Bowden is getting paid to talk about his prostate cancer by several pharmaceutical companies and other organizations....he would be much more credible and inspiring if he talked about his prostate cancer without using it for personal gain. Guest guest
To Terry Heibert Almost all of Malecare's funding is derived from individual contributions and much from the inside of my pocket, as well as from the pockets and extraordinary in kind donations of our volunteer group leaders. Those " ads " you speak of are helpful, but provide barely a percentage. The amount of pharma money that Malecare receives is laughably small compared to that received by the other national profits. Indeed, the enormity of individual contributions that Malecare runs on is a point of pride. Second. The point of my comment is that it would be helpful if the " celebrities " were more forthcoming with their pca stories. Yes, of course they are people like us, entitled to make their own choices....... choices that are best made from inside of each of us. Still, our advocacy world would be so very much stronger if we had more champions--like everyone on this listserv, coming forward, speaking up, and standing (and living ) strong in our mutual fight against prostate cancer.
