Guest guest
Charlie. There is a huge difference in quality between Patel and the 5 or so other Docs working for him. If you choose surgery instead of protons make sure that you get Patel. They will work hard to assign you one of jis assistants. Guest guest
One positive core, Gleason 6 (lowest Gleason score possible), what is your age? And have you explored other options or opinions? I am all for surgery but with your scores I don’t think you need to go through that trauma and have to live with some of the potential side effects – yet. Make sure you explore some non-surgical options and especially Active Surveillance. FYI the Institute doesn’t perform the surgery so the number it claims doesn’t really matter. What you want to know is how many the doctor holding the controls has done. That makes difference. Guest guest
Thanks for the info. I am not going to travel over 1000 miles to have someone else do the surgery. Did Dr Patel treat you? Charlie D. Guest guest
No. Couldn't get them to commit he would be my surgeon. He naturally claims all his Docs are as good as he is which of course is not possible. But my research said he was one of the best. It is a big business. A well oiled machine. First class facility. There were 20 to 30 guys in the waiting room both times we were there. I opted for protons at MDA which is the best of the best for that treatment option. Dr. Lee. Guest guest
This problem must be a lot more common than most people realize. The number of recognized " stars " in medical practice is much smaller than the number of people trying to get treatment from them and, not surprisingly, I think millionaires and celebrities generally get first dibs on their services. In teaching hospitals where a lot of great doctors and scientists work, a lot of the actual work is done by " residents " , i.e., new doctors who are getting their first real experience of surgery or radiation. This is not just for monetary reasons (although that may play a role.) It's because an important mission of the medical school is to train new doctors. In private clinics, where the goal is just to provide services for money, the " star " attracts the clients but if the organization wants to grow and to offer services to all of the people who call, it has to pull in additional doctors. If I could get someone with a really stirling reputation to operate on me, that would be my first choice. If I couldn't, I might still want to talk to the great doctor's associates. It seems to me that in most fields, good people attract other good people and are good at evaluating the people that want to work with them. I don't know this but I would hope that Dr. Patel wouldn't allow a surgeon to work in his clinic if he didn't think highly of the guy. I also think that it's useful to meet the doctor who will operate on you and make your own evaluation. I know I can't evaluate a doctor's surgical skill but I can sometimes tell if he is smart, if he is interested in helping me, if he's patient with my questions, and if he seems to be a trustworthy person. But of course in Charlie's specific case, as he says, he can do that close to home and may not need to travel a thousand miles for it. We do the best we can. Alan " play36@... Guest guest
Charlie if you go to http://www.yananow.org/resources.html and enter Vipul Patel in the site search engine you’ll find two men who had their surgery by Dr Patel. There are many more Pael references, some of which may be Dr Vipul Patel, but some may be another Dr Patel. Guest guest
CLOSE BUT NO CIGARS! MY NAME IS DENNIS. I HAVE STAGE 4 METASTACTIC PROSTATE CANCER. MY GLEASON SCORE IS 7. I AM NOT HAVING SURGERY BECAUSE THE CANCER HAS SPREAD TO THE BONES. MY PSA SCORE WENT FROM 1.6 TO 17.4 IN ABOUT ONE YEAR. IT HAS BEEN SUGGESTED THAT I GO THROUGH 3 LOW DOSES OF CHEMOTHERAPY. I AM A LITTLE APPREHENSIVE ABOUT THIS BECAUSE OF THE DAMAGE THIS MAY CAUSE TO MY BODY OTHER THAN LOSING MY HAIR TEMPORARILY. WHAT SAY YOU? DENNIS IN CALIFORNIA.
