Guest guest
If you are worried about the procedure itself it is not too bad. You will arrive at the center usually the same time every day with a full bladder. ?the full bladder moves it out of the path of the way of the radiation. You then lie down on a table much like an XRay machine and then wait the 10-15 mins while the machine rotates around you making some weird noises. You then get up, go to the bathroom and leave. You do this 5 days a week for up to 8 weeks. My oncologist recommended I take it easy with the spicy foods, caffeine and a few other food choices. I did have some digestive problems but nothing too great. The last day of my radiation treatment I jumped on my motorcycle and rode 325 miles to meet some friends. Other than the digestive problems I did experience some fatigue and I am now lactose intolerant. The fatigue is over and I don’t miss the milk too much. I have had some other side effects but between the cancer, the surgery, radiation and extended hormone treatments I really don’t know which one caused the damage. I guess now it really doesn’t matter either. The primary side effects with radiation treatments are fatigue, nausea, incontinence and diarrhea. Another option you may want to consider; in light of your age and relatively low scores you may also want to consider active survelence which is just keeping on eye on things and seeing how it progresses. You may find that with you it is a very slow growing cancer and you will die of something else before the effects of prostate cancer. Get a second opinion and do some of your own investigating. I know you are a little shocked by the diagnoses but the fact is 80% of the men over 80 years old have PCa. In a lot of men it is a very slow growing cancer. Not subjecting yourself to the effects for radiation my do yourself less harm. I am not a medical doctor and I don’t know all of the facts of your case so investigate some more one your own. My name is Harold…I live in Helena, Alabama…I’m 76 and recently diagnosed with prostate cancer…due to some previous health issues my urologist took surgery off the option list…he then recommended IMRT/IGRT radiotherapy. My pathology report…small cancer tumor in one of 12 segments…Gleason score 7 (3+4) …clinical stage T2a...my PSA is 10.27. I’m not familiar with this IMRT/IGRT procedure; any treatment with radiation in it is scary to me. Can anyone tell me there personal experience with this procedure? As far as I know proton is not available in Alabama & of Course HIFU is not approved by FDA. Thanks in advance Harold Ywal Come Back Now, Ya hear? Guest guest
Hi Harold, Steve Lyons here. I’m 71, PSA was 7.8, 4 of 12 cores positive, Gleason 8. My age, Gleason score and prior surgeries more or less ruled me out of surgery. I My urologist recommended IMRT and Hormone Therapy. After going into Boston and getting a 2nd opinion, I opted for the IMRT radiation and HT. I am now 2/3 of the way through 42 treatments and have had minimal side effects. Guest guest
Herold, There is a site that has postings from people who have undergone various forms of treatment, including radiation. It is......... http://www.yananow.org/Experiences.html Keep in mind that what their experience may or may not apply to you. With this being said I believe it to be a very good site where one can glean insight into treatments and side effects. I highly recommend it.Best regards,Jeff To: "ProstateCancerSupport " <ProstateCancerSupport > Sent: Sunday, April 29, 2012 2:39 PM Subject: Hello support group-can U advice me?
