Guest guest
Hi, Carob's a good idea!!! Don't know why I didn't think of it, since I eat it a lot myself (and it's not even so expensive anymore). I bet Kailin would love a bunch of carob covered peanuts to keep at school for special snack times! And I know what you mean about reading with a magnifying glass. I always check for whey and caisin, and of course the obvious stuff like milk or cream, but last week some lactic acid slipped by me in the soy sauce when we had a stir fry. Never even thought to check a SOY SAUCE label for milk products! Kailin was curled up on the couch for an hour with abdominal pain after dinner. I felt like a real jerk when I read the soy sauce label and realized I'd " poisoned " her. I've also accidentally given her Italian dressing with cheese in it in the past, as well as breadcrumbs with parmesean (to coat her baked chicken), and Ken's given her waffles with whey in them. We've got a good non-dairy cookbook with no-milk pancake, waffle, and french toast recipies that I'm going to try soon! (She loves that stuff, and has really missed it). Thank goodness for all the soy and rice based ice creams they have out now, not to mention almond cheese (which she likes better than soy cheese). I went to college in upstate NY, by the way, so I know what winters are like there. (Pretty much like they are here in Madison, WI.) Let's all curl up under a nice warm blankie and come out in the spring!!! MICHELLE A., weren't you concerned a while ago that one of your daughters might have food allergies? Did you ever figure out what wasn't agreeing with her? I wish it hadn't taken us 6 years to figure out Kailin's allergic to milk products. Oh well, live 'n learn.... How'w Levi doing, by the way? Hopefully sailing past all the winter colds! Gotta add another non-CF-related note here. Kailin was sharpening a pencil tonight, and afterwards she was sort of bouncing the eraser against the kitchen wall. She tripped on a pile of boots which was drying on the " mud mat " , and plunged the point of the pencil completely into the palm of her right hand. I saw the entire thing happen, and I was the one to pull the pencil out of her hand. I've never heard her shriek like that before, even when she broke her wrist last summer. Amidst the chaos I put in a call to acute care, and verified that pencils are now graphite, NOT lead, so there's no poisoning risk. As for the small sliver left under the skin, the nurse said to soak it every day, put antibiotic ointment on it, and it should work its way out. Kailin cried for over an hour tonight. Ken turned really pale, and tried to make her feel better by telling her stories about disgusting things that happened to him and his brother as kids, which of course made her more hysterical. Then he picked up her hand and squeezed around the puncture site to try to ease the sliver out, which sent her into a blind fury. She wouldn't let him near her for a long time after that, and he retreated to go be queezy up in the bedroom (he doesn't do childhood injuries too well, that tends to be my department-- he does the vomit, which I can't stand cleanig up!). I've gotta tell you, though, for some reason even I was grossed out by this little stabbing. UCK!!! bye, , mom of Meagan wcf and asthma, and Kailin (allergy kid!) w. asthma and a REALLY sore hand
