I received a request to post the following notice in our group, which follows:

Dear all,

we are two Dutch students at Eindhoven University of Technology, currently

writing our Bachelor Thesis about online health communities. For this, we could

use your help. We would like to ask you a few questions about your experiences

in your online health community. This would take about 10-15 minutes.

No identifying information will be asked and the information will not be shared

with third parties. If you are interested in the results of the research, you

can indicate so at the end of the questionnaire. We will then send you a summary

of the results.

By participating in this study you can help improving experiences in online

health communities like this one. Please do not distribute/forward this message

to other communities.

To start the questionnaire, please click on the following link:

Thank you very much for your time and effort.

Best regards,

Hello Alan, I replied and answered the several questions that actually took more than the 10 to 15 minutes noted. However, the questions were interesting and I expect require at least some logical ability to answer them appropriately. They should not be answered hastily, but rather reviewed closely then answered. Always willing to accommodate students interested in health issues and the value of online support groups. As a moderator and owner of other groups, that was was a very interesting study.

The single greatest watch-out on online health groups, that I see, is that

members independently verify information gleaned through the group(s). Also,

owners/moderators/members need to be sensitive to others and respectful. This

group's leaders have those traits and I try to portray those in my role in other

groups.

An online health group has many members who have a very high emotional

investment in what they are discussing and issues can arise therein that eclipse

other interest groups. But ALL online groups have a possibility to quickly get

out of hand, especially with politics or other emotionally loaded issues. But

health groups have the added risk of members using anecdotal information for

personal life impacting decisions, a definite no-no in my mind. Any suggestion

offered in these areas needs to be treated as subject to verification by the

recipient. The leaders of this group seem to adhere to that mantra. Good job!
