Please have your slides sent to one of the country's leading prostate cancer pathologists if they come back positive. The pathologist at the local hospital gave me a Gleason 4+3 and my urologist recommended immedate surgery. The slides were sent to Dr Epstein at s Hopkins and came back a 3+3. When I discussed this with the urologist, he told me he had worked with the hospital pathologist for years and completely trusted his judgement. Time for a new urologist! When I discussed this with a second urologist, he said I am one lucky guy. If you have cancer, I recommend you read Dr Walsh's book on surviving prostate

cancer. It will bring you up to speed quickly, so when you talk to the doctors, you will be able to understand what they are saying. Good luck,Charlie D. To: ProstateCancerSupport Sent: Sunday, July 8, 2012 8:52 PM Subject:

well new to this as i'm sure everyone was at some point. had trouble with urinating at night so went to my GP and he sent me to a urologist after my psa came back at 3.5 . the urologist set me up for prostate biopsy in office . they told me it would be a little uncomfortable. well it was terrible really hurt . they used Lidocaine but not enough ,i will get my results but never go back to a busy office were time is more important then to ease my pain . the day after when washing my tender rear i noticed a lump and that day went for surgery to remove a hemorrhoid that came out which i never had before or i didn't no i had it .the surgery went well and really was comfortable at the hospital were i wish i had the biopsy. well i get my results wednesday and have been digesting all the info here and other sites. anyway just wanted t vent ,have a good one Jim

Welcome Jim

I would suggest that you go to and join a Yahoo group called

Protoninfo.

Lots of info there. Take a deep breath and slow down and figure out

Welcome to the Prostate Cancer Support Forum.

If your biopsy is positive, this can be a frightening time

and it is important to bear in mind what Dr Jon Oppenheimer, one of the leading

pathologists in the US

has to say on his blog at http://theprostateblog.blogspot.com/

For the vast majority of men with a recent

diagnosis of prostate cancer the most important question is not what treatment

is needed, but whether any treatment at all is required. Active surveillance is

the logical choice for most men (and the families that love them) to make.

You might find it useful to visit YANA

- You Are Not Alone Now www.yananow.org a

site set up for newly diagnosed people. The first section gives some basic

information in plain language with links to more complex and technical sites. There

is one link to the NCCN Guidelines at http://www.nccn.com/files/cancer-guidelines/prostate/index.html#/1/

- downloading those guidelines will give you a good decision path. Many people

have found that the booklet “A

Strange Place” has been helpful –

that’s at http://www.yananow.org/StrangePlace/index.shtml

There is also a section with resources specifically for women

at http://www.yananow.org/ProstateCancerWomen.shtml

The second section of the site is where men are invited to

tell their prostate cancer stories and how they arrived at their decisions

regarding treatment. Many people have mailed to say how useful they have found

this, especially because most of the men are happy to respond to specific

questions. The section of the site can be found by clicking the link labelled

Experiences or going to http://www.yananow.org/Experiences.shtml

There is a section dealing with the management of the

disease, including some dietary hints at http://www.yananow.org/MyersManagement.htm

there is also a section suggesting the questions that you should seek

answers to before making any treatment decision at http://www.yananow.org/questions.htm

But in any event, please post some details of your diagnosis

– Age, PSAs leading up to the diagnosis, Gleason Score and Staging (these

terms are all explained on the YANA site) and

any questions you might have. Just remember – there are no dumb

questions. We all started off where you are now, but we’ve collectively

learned a lot over the years.

All the best

Prostate men need enlightening, not

frightening

Terry Herbert - diagnosed in 1996 and

still going strong

Ouch, indeed. I had my biopsy done at the doc's office too, but it caused

nothing like that. Still, one of the things that convinced me to have surgery

rather than active surveillance was the thought of going through a biopsy twice

a year or so.

There are just two rules for this group

1 No Spam

2 Be kind to others

Please recognise that Prostate Cancerhas different guises and needs different

levels of treatment and in some cases no treatment at all. Some men even with

all options offered chose radical options that you would not choose. We only ask

that people be in

formed before choice is made, we cannot and should not tell other members what

to do, other than look at other options.
