Healing Lyme with Juice Fasting I felt it was finally time to blog on this topic because it has been such a huge thing in my life. If you read my story on reversing Lyme disease (4 part series starting with this post: http://blog.tamiduncan.com/2011/10/16/reversing-lyme-disease.aspx), you know that juice fasting was paramount for my recovery. I get many e-mails asking me which plan I used, how I did it, etc. I want to give you that information here. I want to be clear about juice fasting. It's not easy. It's not for the faint of heart. It is for the people who are dedicated to going to hell and back to get their life back. It's for the people who are ready to heal on all levels and are fully determined with every bone in their body to get the job don e. I say this with conviction because there are times when it will seem too hard and is much easier to just eat food to feel better, to make the detox stop. God knows that when a person with Lyme disease detoxes it can be pretty hairy. So embarking on a juice fast to heal chronic illness is indeed like going off to war. My strategy is simple: Drink only freshly juiced juice (in a juicer - NOT A BLENDER, juiced right in front of you), herbal caffeine free tea, and fresh clean water. That's it! No smoothies, no coffee, no eating anything. Fresh juice. A ratio of 80% vegetable/green juice to 20% fruit juice is best. Buy organic whenever possible and drink as much as you want. I get a weekly massage a nd do daily meditation, prayer and Reiki. Before you start any juice fast I highly recommend you pick up this book. Juice Fasting and Detoxification by Steve Meyerowitz. This book will break down and tell you everything you need to know about Juice Fasting, including recipes, contraindications to fasting, how long to fast and handling detox issues. This is what I follow when I do my fasts. The Good the Bad and the Ugly: What to expect during a Juice Fast I'm going to be straight with you. When you are healing a chronic illness (and by healing I don't mean cure), the body has a lot of work to do. It's not easy...remember it's like going to war, going off to battle. So I will be honest in some of the things you may experience. I do want to point out though that this is a battle that can be won. So your prize is sweet victory! The beauty of increased energy, health and healing. This is will make this journey worth it on all counts. It took a 22 day fast for me. (with other smaller fasts before this) Here are the most common GOOD symptoms during a juice fast: Times when you feel you are connected deeply spirituallyClear head and able to focus well (gone is the mind chatter)Weight loss (1/2 to 1 pound per day usually)A feeling of purging the old and bringing in the new way of lifeClearing of addictionsFeeling your cells be bathed and nurtured in beautiful live foods put on this earth by God for you.Resetting your eating habits to include more raw vegetables and fruitsAn energetic "high" where you feel like you are connected to all things. (my favorite part) Here are the most common BAD symptoms during a juice fast: Mild headache Achy muscles and jointsLow energy - weaknessHead rush when standing up too fastDiarrhea or Constipation (after a few days though you won't poop at all and this isn't constipation it's that your bowels don't have anything to put out)Bad breathWhite film on tongueSkin breakouts Hunger and food cravingsPain in liver/gallbladder or kidneys (indicates detox pathway not flowing)Old negative emotions may arise that are attached to whatever you are detoxing Here are some of the most common UGLY symptoms during a juice fast. Burning poop/diarrhea that feels like you swallowed a bottle of Tabasco sauceYou may poop out worms (see www.lymephotos.com for a sample picture of what I have seen in my 22 day juice fast)Can you say cranky and irritable? The kids may need to hide in their rooms for a few days while you adjust. So you can see how you are battling against not only the infectious process inside you but your own emotions. Everything inside you will tell you to give up, that you can't do this. These are your negative thought patterns. If you quiet those you will hear a soft little voice telling you that you CAN do this and you ARE WORTHY of better health. So you may be thinking with all this negative side effects why in the world would you want to do a juice fast? The answer is that when you are done you will feel better than you did before you started. You may be "healed" or you may have peeled off some layers. It may take you one fast or several fasts to get your health back. But you will be better and improved, no doubt about it. The longer you fast, the more healing takes place. As always, consult your doctor before starting any kind of juice fast or adjustment to the medical protocol he/she has placed you on. I am happy to say that it has been 15 months since the juice fast I talked about in the previous articles. None of my Lyme symptoms have returned. I consider myself in remission. This CAN work and does for many people. Setting the Lyme disease aside here, thousands of people are juice fasting currently in a new trend based on the documentary film "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead." You can check out this super cool phenomenon at: http://www.jointhereboot.com/. They have programs where you combine juicing with healthy eating for weight loss. However in the movie they do a 60 day juice fast and the results are amazing. It's worth your time to check this out. Currently I am on day 8 of a maintenance juice fast. I'm not gonna lie, it's hard. If you follow me on Facebook you'll see my emotions are working overdrive to pu sh myself through to continue on. This is where the energy work and support of others really comes into play. I meditate each day, spend time in prayer and do self-Reiki often. This is what is helping me forge through. If you begin a juice fast I highly recommend doing weekly Reiki sessions with a qualified Reiki Master.
