A thoughtful commentary on the seemingly never-ending debate on PSA screening is available at:http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dr-dean-ornish/prostate-cancer-screening_b_1587932.html

This short article in the Huffington Post's Healthy Living blog discusses the need to more thoughtfully and individually address how to deal with the results of prostate cancer screening. "The problem is that treating clinicians have historically done a poor job matching the right patients with the right treatments. "

The article by Drs. Dean Ornish, Preventive Medicine Research Institute, and UCSF surgeons Carroll (Chief of Urology), and Matt berg includes links to the following references:

"My bias is that PSA testing is still a very important approach to preventing prostate cancer deaths, but PSA testing needs to be used much differently than is currently practiced in the United States. I’ve said this a few times, it all should be based on risk. Not every man has the same risk of prostate cancer and not every prostate cancer carries the same risk of death. And, if we are going to continue to use PSA testing, we have to accept the facts that we don’t need to test every man every year and every cancer we diagnose doesn’t need aggressive treatment."
