Guest guest
Paz  I do always aim for the 3.5 to 1 ratio but I am not sure that this is important, less fat, might be OK I think  I know with me I have to keep my carbs very low. I loose ketosis at around 30g, but have chosen to aim for 15g. My logic here is that if I only eay 15g most days then I most definately will remain in ketosis and I will not have to even think about am I in ketosis am I not.  Also, if I make an error, ie take a new supplement that has sugar or starch in it or say, want to eat out and have a burger and that has a lot of starch in it, or I end up having a little gravy at a friends house, etc etc, these errors should not bring me out of ketosis  Now I know Bee claims we are all in ketosis, even at 40g 50g carbs, but this is not really correct, not by my way of understanding things. Some folk, a few, can sustain ketosis at this higher level of carbs, but these folk are particularly active. We with fibro, even when well cannot be that active. My strength and stamina is that of a person my age, I would say, but slightly below average.. So I move around at the rate that you would see f somebody in our society that is classed as well but really some toning and activity really is needed. I am getting by, I would pass, the run an egg and spoon race with the moms at the local kindergarden, but I would not get in the army, would not be a gym teacher, would not be a dancer. I have some way to go. I am OK, will survive, very fortunate, and right now would not pass the tests for fibro, they would say I do not have it, but I am only fit by societies standards not to the level I want to be, but I am getting there. And I count my blessings that I am here at this level and no longer tormented with fibro in its true form  I have tried to leave ketosis and eat higher carbs a few times, every time I did this within 3 to 4 days my fibro was back. Every symptoms aggravated by it, pain in joints, muscles, fatigue, gut problems, brain problems etc. Also, as much as my misery was back and increasing, there was a tremendous urge to go with it for a while longer. I am an addict to carbs. I have seen true addiction, ie alcoholism and drug addiction enough times to recognise this behavior. Fortunately I have good support here and plenty of experience to know what needs to be done, usually one day water fast, no carbing then low carbing. And I do it and travel back but this is always traumatic for me too. All this messing around can take up a week, ie a few days of carb addiction and then a few days of withdrawel, and it is never worth it, puts me behind with everything  I have witnessed folk in rehab and I treat this whole week in the same loving and supportive manner that I witnessed there. I take extreme care of myself the whole week, like I am a child, very needy because I am indeed just like that the whole time all this is going on  I do use the ketostix. I do not think they are as accurate as time goes by but they do provide some guide, especially at times when returning to ketosis. But to be honest I, and others here can tell pretty much immediately, if I am in ketosis, my manner is much more relaxed and I have very very little desire for carbs and I can just suddenly cope with life again. It is kind of essential I stay in ketosis  It is not all dispair. Now I am not really experiencing much fibro at all, 1 out of 10 most days. I have moved onto some other foods from Bees Healthy Eating Program and finding I can tolerate these foods better than the carbs  The carbs I am most safe with are low starch veg, herbs spices saurkraut and sometimes a small amount of lemon. But now, I am more well I can througout the week have unpasturised cheese, sprouted seeds and sometimes roasted nuts. And i do now more often eat out with friends and take small risks, and I do get away with the odd risky food. If I have a reaction I water fast immediately and this sorts it out, but this is my way not really Bees way  Yes, I think you will be OK with less fat. I have as much as I can because I think it helps me with energy, but I do know that when carbs are very very low, if the ratio is slightly out and we eat slightly more protein than we should we can still sustain ketosis because only a very small portion of that protein will be turned to glucose, and we would get away with it  I know this is all slightly different to what Bee is saying but not much. I am much more keen that she is on the ultra low carbs. I do not think we loose much in the way of nutrition since all the nutrients in plants are in meat, and liver makes a difference. But I have just this pass two weeks added a little seaweed to my diet. Seaweed is not on Bees list, she regards it as too high in iodine, but because it is such a good source of folate, I have decided i want to have some. Kelp too also provides folate, but it is the high iodine again. I cannot ask Bee about this because she would rather I raise my carbs, but I do not think I can do  Hope this makes sense. If not please ask again, anything. I will be able to explain things another way, and might even have links  Love Joanne To: fibromyalgiacured Sent: Wednesday, 5 September 2012, 22:28 Subject: Ketogenic approach/ for Joan  Hi Joan, I was wondering if my healing could be accelerated by taking a more extreme ketogenic style. I must say that there are days where I almost don't eat carbs, but it is not regularly. I still have days where I am very hungry and carbs (vegetables) help me go through this phase. I still want to try this and just observe it when I have this hungry phases. After 8 months I never cheat and I don't feel the urge. I would say I eat by now between 15 and 35gr carbs a day. I don't remember if you eat 10 or 15 gr. I also vary with my protein/fat ratio. I don't always reach the 3.5 ratio. I vary between 2.5 and 3.5. Do you think it is an important part of healing to always eat the 1:3.5 ratio? Let me know what you think. Thank you in advance. Paz
