Guest guest
<snip> Health care professionals need to consider the impact of prostate cancer on the ‘whole man’ rather than focusing on cancer treatment in isolation, according to results from an international survey of prostate cancer patients and their partners. <snip> That's the opening message in a Press Release you can read at http://multivu.prnewswire.com/mnr/prne/ferring/42412/ and which is discussed on The " New " Prostate Cancer Infolink at http://prostatecancerinfolink.net/2010/04/24/the-need-to-treat-the-whole-man-not-just-his-cancer/#comment-8267 All the points are valid, in my opinion, but the one that really resonated with me was that " 90 percent of the patients felt that it would have been useful to have a “buddy” with experience of prostate cancer to whom they could talk and ask questions. " When I was diagnosed back in 1996, one of the strongest emotions I felt was that I was so isolated: that no one really understood what it was like to hear the word CANCER applied to you. Once I regained my feet and found some mates on the Internet the realisation dawned that it would be very useful for those who followed to find somewhere in cyberspace where men could find out how other men had dealt with their issues, where they could talk and ask questions. This idea was pooh-poohed by many who believe that only ‘scientific’ studies have any value and that anecdotal evidence is not only worthless but downright dangerous. But nevertheless, this lead up to the setting up of my website You Are Not Alone Now at htt://www.yananow.net - a non-commercial venture that I funded personally initially and which now depends on voluntary donations. There are almost 900 stories from men who have been through the mill - some going back, like mine, to the 90s, some as recent as last month, covering all the available treatments, from Active Surveillance to HIFU and Cryotherapy, and most of them kept up to date with at least annual report back from the men. I believe it is unique - I certainly haven't come across a similar site I think it is a pity that so many men are unaware of the ‘buddies’ that exist in men on the site.
