Guest guest
No the difference with Norway is that although there is a strong BF culture there is also a lot of support. The midwives are properly trained with BF skills, they have good one to one peer supporters and the breastfeeding organisation has counsellors. There was also a lot of legislation which made breastfeeding and returning to work easy as well as paid paternity leave which can help second and third time mums get breastfeeding established without having to worry about the older children missing out as Daddy is there helping. Also if everyone around you breastfeeds, then you see it every day. You see how people do it and you learn without realizing it. There was an article written by Hannah Hulme Hunter in New Gen. She talks about the three strand of support - retrained midwives and support from the medical profession, governmental support with good legislation, and an excellent lay breastfeeding group. And also Norway have never suffered the big change from breast to bottle that we did in the 60s and the formula manufacturers never got such a strong hold. Sue H.
