Guest guest
I have read this book and many more like it. I could not survive Prostate Cancer without Surgery, but now I will never know. And the one I had was a "botched" procedure with the da ' Vinnci method and so the Doctor says to my family that he got it all. After three years with PSA readings of 0.1/0.9/1.9/ & a 3.7..Does that look like he got it all. I go for Bone scan, MRI, and Katt scan on the 14th of July. Anxious to see what this new Dr. has to say as my other two Urologist went back to the West coast. Radiation, and Chemo I will not have. I have a friend that is being treated with two new drugs Tykerb And Herceptin for her liver cancer. Four in the group are having good results. I haven't checked these two drugs out but will before I return too the Kirkland Clinic in Birmingham. I think at times doing nothing is the best medicine.. Guest guest
For all, It IS important to recognize that the “Primer” came about at the urging of caregiver Donna Pogliano to Dr. Strum of the necessity of such a book and their subsequent collaboration. Donna’s concern came about to insure the appropriate care of her partner who had been diagnosed with Prostate Cancer when she became aware of the absence of any books with sufficient comprehensive content. Without her concern and many hours of putting together all the basics she could think of that would be important in a book, a book this comprehensive would likely have never been published. Granted, the book is referred to more often as authored by Dr. Strum, but that is likely because he is so well known. Way back Donna provided a “Brief History” that I saved to my folders that better explains: A Primer on Prostate Cancer, The Empowered Patient's Guide A BRIEF HISTORYIn October, 1999 when my partner was diagnosed with prostate cancer, I knew nothing about the disease. I didn't know where the prostate was even located, nor did I know what it did. But I took the responsibility for learning all I could so that I could best help my partner. Finally, when I had learned enough through reading, watching and listening, I recognized the need for support of patients and their loved ones that goes beyond sympathy. The world of prostate cancer is complex, controversial and confusing. Doctors impose their own biases, sometimes put profit motives above the well-being of patients, and often fail to disclose unpleasant facts regarding quality of life issues both during and after treatment. I was determined to educate patients so that they would not need to endure the same pitfalls that affected the outcomes of knowledgeable patients who had come before them. I was sure that if I began an educational project to put all the combined wisdom of the people I knew from various email discussion lists to all in one place, that other patients would benefit from their experience. But I am not a doctor and such a work would lack the credibility and validation of a medical expert. What I needed was an expert prostate cancer specialist to review and edit the work. Enter Dr. Strum, world renowned medical oncologist and co-founder of the Prostate Cancer Research Institute.Dr. Strum is the high profile celebrity doctor that makes newly diagnosed patients aware that the Primer isn't just another book based on patient experiences written by a patient, it is a medical reference work for patients to use and refer to for authoritative answers provided by an expert and, fortunately for them, it also reflects the concerns of patients from a perspective that only patients and partners can know. The Primer was a labor of love for me for six months or so before became involved with the project. Then it became OUR labor of love. The first draft of what became the Primer was written in March, 2000 at my kitchen table all in one sitting from about six in the evening until about four in the morning. Then it was sent for comments to about a dozen expert patients. They're all still in the acknowledgments on page 187, right across from my benediction which appeared at the end of the first draft and at the end of every draft since: " We wish you low PSA's and may your days be good, and long upon the earth. " The serendipitous collaboration with happened because of a phone call I made to him in connection with a request for contact information for prostate cancer activists whom I hoped would become involved in a project to make September " Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. " I would never have had the nerve to phone a celebrity doctor like Strum for any reason before, even if I had thought of it, but I took a chance and emailed him because I knew he was somebody who knew everybody. I " knew " him from Patient to Physician (p2p), an online prostate cancer educational service where patients ask questions and doctors volunteer to write answers. I had long admired him as the great humanitarian doctor that he is, who gives unselfishly of his time and effort to help patients in a multitude of different ways. He emailed back, suggesting I phone him instead so we could discuss my advocacy project. I was a little taken aback when after having summoned my nerve and after dialing him up as he instructed, he began to grill me about who I was and what my involvement with prostate cancer was. So searching my mind for SOMETHING, ANYTHING I might have done that might recommend me, I mentioned that I was writing an educational tool for patients and that I hoped to have it printed somehow. He offered to give it his " Virgo review " and I dutifully sent my Word document off to him by email. When I got it back, I was finally certain that we had a document that was medically accurate down to the last detail, and my beloved friend Young, who has since died of prostate cancer, proudly posted it to the Phoenix5 website where it still resides: http://www.phoenix5.org/Basics/DPprimer0918.html. But alas, , Virgo to the last, wasn't really satisfied with the web primer because it had no references. He promised that he would add footnotes and references to increase the credibility of the document, and so began a collaboration that spanned the next two years and the next hundred or so drafts that we sent back and forth. We had support for the development of the book from the Prostate Cancer Research Institute in Los Angeles, inasmuch as is the co-founder of that organization. Life Extension Foundation based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida agreed to publish the work. And the prostate cancer support group US TOO! International provided support by placing an advance order for the first 5000 copies to be distributed through their support group chapters worldwide. We premiered the book together at the 2002 Prostate Cancer Research Institute conference at USC Norris in Los Angeles in early October, 2002, just days after the first copies came off the presses. On the plane, I wrote an article for Life Extension Magazine to introduce the Primer and tell what I still think is the fantastic story of the Primer's genesis. If you're interested in reading it, go to: http://www.lef.org/magazine/mag2002/dec2002_report_prostate_01.html. We published a book with no money, no contract and no idea how it would be distributed. This is a miracle if there ever was one. The second edition is at the printer, and we'll begin working on the third edition soon, which is planned to be a full revision and update. And we are very proud that a German support group is translating the Primer into the German language. and I hope that the Primer will help a great many men and their families through their prostate cancer journey in the years to come. We are dedicated to the idea that our book will help patients to undertake a strategy of disease management that will optimize prostate cancer outcomes for themselves and for their loved ones.Donna PoglianoCo-author of " A Primer on Prostate Cancer, The Empowered Patient's Guide " Well said, Donna, and multitudes of us are thankful.
