Guest guest
Here are some relevant extracts and my comments on them: <snip> The new method could be widely available within 18 months, they say. Cancer Research UK has welcomed the findings, but says more work is needed. <snip> COULD be available in 18 months? Here’s my $10 that says no way. If it ever becomes available it will take a lot longer than 18 months. <snip> Their findings from a study of 288 patients, published in the journal Clinical Cancer Research, suggest this is better than the PSA check at detecting cancers, with far fewer false positives. <snip> This is a small study of which no details are available to see the quality of the study. It only SUGGESTS it is better than PSA, which isn’t much of a claim, since PSA is useless at identifying PSA in the majority of cases. <snip> Larger-scale trials are now being planned in the UK and the United States. The researchers envisage the EN2 urine check would be used alongside the PSA blood test. <snip> Good marketing poly to suggest EN2 as an adjunct to PSA and therefore not a threat to that enormous market. But if it is so good why would it be used alongside a test that doesn’t work? <snip> But the Chief Executive of the Prostate Cancer Charity, Neate, cautioned that the new test was not perfect. " Given the known limitations of the PSA blood test, we welcome this research into a new potential test for prostate cancer; however, this is a relatively small study that first needs to be validated on a much larger scale. " <snip> I agree – and that will take a lot longer than 18 months All the best Prostate men need enlightening, not frightening Terry Herbert - diagnosed in 1996 and still going strong Read A Strange Place for unbiased information at http://www.yananow.org/StrangePlace/index.html From: ProstateCancerSupport [mailto:ProstateCancerSupport ] On Behalf Of D Sent: Friday, 4 March 2011 11:57 AM To: ProstateCancerSupport Subject: EN2 test for Prostate Cancer detection I haven’t seen this mentioned on this site, but just read this from a BBC feed. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-12610972 Dennis J dennisp42@... Guest guest
Hello Dennis, As noted in the paper " However, more work needs to be done to find out whether or not EN2 is capable of distinguishing between aggressive prostate cancers that need treatment, and non-aggressive ones that don't,” this possible future test is still in the early stages of development.
