Guest guest
This post was pulled from the NGDF board this morning...I had copied and saved it because these are books that I had not heard of before but look interesting and I figured that one of the reasons for it being pulled was because it was quoted throughout and possibly w/o permission. Thought I would share it with you here and hope it is okay to do this. Also if any of read these two books could you comment on them? Thanks tons. Jody Katrine on 3/30/00 at 10:49:24 AM Not yet on the NGDF recommended reading list but available through amazon.com (just type in Healing Options) is Kate Flax's " Healing Options: A Report on Graves' Disease Treatments. " Dr. Christiane Northrup, lecturer and author of, " Women's Bodie's, Women's Wisdom, " says " Anyone who is struggling to find meaning in the experience of Graves'Disease will find hope, healing, and inspiration in this book. " Flax herself says: " I am a 50 year-old woman and I have Graves' Disease. It was diagnosed in 1991--years after its onset. Six months after diagnosis, I received modern medicine's standard protocol for controlling the disease, radioactive iodine (RAI)-eradication of my thyroid gland. Since then I have come to believe that modern medicine's practice of " symptom treatment " does not provide all the care and " cure " a body needs. After this radiation I developed new symptoms that were horrible and terribly difficult to live with because I had become, in almost perfect textbook fashion, hypothyroid.(read the excellent, newly released " Living Well With Hypothyroidism: What Your Doctor Doesn't Tell That You Need To Know " by Shomon also available on amazon.com)I then began taking synthetic thyroid hormone replacement This medication was meant to restore me to a state of balance. However, I have never felt my " normal " self again. What was I to do now? I decided that this time, rather than simply looking for a quick fix for my symptoms, I would shift my focus to explore the causes of my chronic illness. I would look deeper in search of true healing. What is healing? Healing is a process of restoring a person to spiritual wholeness, to peace of mind and body. I wrote this book to heal myself and to be of help to you, the reader. In it I tell my story and that of many others who have experienced Graves' disease. I have heard and still hear hundreds of these stories through my work as an NGDF support group leader and my activity in the Thyroid Federation International. I feel that anyone experiencing any type of chronic illness must be responsible for him/herself. Healing does not respond to magic bullets. It is often a long process requiring the practice of many different complementary modalities such as diet (nutrition), art, music, talk therapy, mind/body exercises, communing with nature, etc. In this self-help process, I urge you to choose any complimentary care professional as carefully as you would choose a physician. In my book, I provide references for finding these professionals, explanations of many different healing options, as well as other useful information that may help you in your quest for wellness. I wish you great success with your healing.
