Guest guest
Hi, all... Following is an article my mom got off the CF web page. It's about asthma and CF. I found it very interesting, especially in light of the fact that so many people on the list have kids with CF and asthma, and other kids with asthma, and sometimes the parents have asthma too... I was hypothesizing it's another one of those mysterious " carrier symptoms " that the researchers & docs don't seem to believe in as much as we do. : Thanks very much for the insurance info. We have a policy through my husband's work, a very large company (-). I will check the paperwork and see exactly what it says. I can see people with several hospitalizations going through even a million dollars pretty quickly. Everything is so expensive! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us!! Elaine 's Mom (2-year-old w/cf... yes, he's two... definitely two... trust me, he reminds me about a thousand times a day... help...) CF WEB PAGE > Date: Wed, 12 Jan 2000 10:05:32 -0700 > Non-CFTR Genes that Modify Disease Variability in Individuals with CF > Autumn Clos > University of Arizona > Tucson, AZ, USA > > CF is a complex genetic disease. People who have CF may have the > same genetic mutation yet have very different disease severity. The lung disease in CF has been shown to be poorly correlated to the CF > gene mutation. This is called phenotypic heterogeneity. It may be due to different environmental exposures or life experiences, but also may be due to genes other than the CF genes. These genes may be modifying the nature of the CF lung disease. First, genes that can cause asthma and allergy will be studied to see if CF lung disease is worse in patients who have these genes. Second, one of the genes controlling the muscle in the airway will be studied to see if changes which improve or worsen lung function in normal individuals and asthmatics similarly improve or worsen the course of CF. Sixty CF > patients will have these genes studied. Their lung function and how > reactive or " twitchy " their airways are will be studied to measure the impact of these non-CF genes on the lung. If positive results are > obtained, this study will be a significant advance in our understanding of the nature of CF lung disease. > _______________________________________________________ Get 100% FREE Internet Access powered by Excite Visit http://freeworld.excite.com
