According to the one speciatist I have seen, no one but especially women should have a sigmoidoscopy without some sort of sedation. I was not sure of his reasoning but I agreed with him - I had a doctor surprise me with one once (he did not explain what was going on AT ALL and just did it in his office - my revenge was to scream so loud that I scared all of the paitents int he waiting room). But the worst was all the gas build up - that hurt less but longer.

Hi Pris,A sigmoidoscopy is also a procedure to look in the colon, but the 'equipment' doesn't go as far in, so doesn't look as far up the colon. Since it doesn't go in as far, you aren't sedated for the procedure, although you still have to do the enemas in advance to try to clean things out.I had one this summer - it wasn't fun at all because (at least for me) it built up a tremendous amount of gas in the intestines. After they let me go I spent a good 45 minutes in the bathroom at the medical building farting out all of the gas that had built up before I could drive home.Beth
