Guest guest
Dr Snuffy Myers has a series of videos dealing with various aspects of PCA. The latest has Dr Ash Tewari, a much admired surgeon presenting and you can see the video here http://askdrmyers.wordpress.com/2011/04/04/dr-ash-tewari-on-biopsies/ In the light of the fury generated by various bodies (and I think the hapless Otis Brawley) suggesting that men over the age of 70 might not need annual PSA tests, it is interesting to see Dr Tewari’s views, which seem to coincide with this!! His closing advice is essentially that anyone with an ‘abnormal’ PSA (not defined in this video) who has a series of negative biopsy procedures should have a saturation biopsy with 30 – 40 needle cores taken. What he does not say ( and what would be particularly interesting, I feel) is how many of these very aggressive procedures discovered aggressive variants of the disease as opposed to variants that might be regarded as indolent, non-life threatening or insignificant. This would enable men to balance any potential risk associated with a saturation biopsy against any potential benefit.
