Guest guest
Hi Faye, ACK!!! That he would recommend RAI, especially if he suspects it is postpartum hyperthyroidism!!! I just had a friend go through that also. After 6 mos. it settled down and her symptoms disappeared, well the majority did...took about 9 mos. before she felt her old self again. The Beta Blockers should help very very soon, day or two she should begin seeing an improvement. Tell her not to be skipping meds though, even if they should make her a tired. She should also check her salt to make sure it is iodine free...stay away from shellfish, ie. shrimp, scallops, clams etc. And tomatos were something that set me hyper, I didn't know they have lots of iodine in them, as well as green beans. Others will respond with more info I am sure. Tell her to hang in there and we will all hope and pray it IS postpartum for her, and if it isn't, have her join up, lots of support and education here. Take care, Jody _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Her endocrinologist suspects her hyperthyroidism is just postpartum, based on her thyroid scan and put her on beta-blockers for the next six weeks.. How soon do they work? Her tremors really disturb her, along with other symptoms. Having gone straight to Tapazole I'm not familiar with how beta-blockers work. Also, any other suggestions on what she might do to feel better? I already told her to stay away from caffeine and iodine and make sure she's taking iodine-free supplements. And, needless to say, after the six week period he recommends radioactive iodine. Her education has begun. Thanks in advance for any advice, Fay Young >> Fay, I'm newly diagnosed. I went to ER with heart rate right under 200. Mine started working in 24 hours and within 2 weeks I'm normal..email me if she wants to know more. I was terrified. Now I'm just scared about eyes ) Kim

Guest guest
Hi Fay When I was put on beta blockers (I was severely hyper - tremour so bad I couldn't eat soup, pulse around 120, BP - 170/120 etc), they helped within 24hrs. I was put on antenolol 1 twice per day. I was also on high dose of PTU. So, the beta blockers were only needed for about 6 weeks. I recently took 1 per day for 5 days or so when my hyper symptoms returned. Has your friend had bloods to diagnose or is it symptoms only the doc is basing his diagnosis on? RAI as the next step - I don't think so. Needless to say I suspect you have given her the low down on that, Fay! Hope she feels better soon.
