Remember when Redhen (or was it ) shared the news of a new lab

test, the transferrin receptor assay for assessing the effects of

ionizing radiation on cells? The article about it is in the archives

and on Atomic Women and the

researcher is Dr. Gong. I wrote him a while back suggesting that he

test RAI treated GD patients, both short and long term. I heard from

him

today and he is interested in discussing this Although we already

know that ionizing radiation affects our stem cells, these tests will

provide GD patients with an idea of

how long the effects last and how severe they are.

So I need input. I already talked to U and she wants to be

tested. I need to know how many other RAI treated patients are

interested in this and if they are willing to pay for the test if he

decides to just offer to test us, and we use the data for our own

information or informal study. I should be

talking to him early next week so please let me know if you're

interested so I can have an idea of how many samples we can provide.

I'll probably talk to some but not all of the many internet thyroid

groups re this. Even if you haven't had RAI, I'd appreciate your

feedback. To be a valid study we should run GD patients with similar

dates of diagnosis who haven't received RAI. The effects of our

uptake scans could even be considerable.

The original study reports that this test can measure accumulated

cell damage from ionizing radiation--one of the major causes of

cancer-long before any physical signs are evident. .
