Guest guest
Hi - PCOS isn't reversible as far as I know. I wish you lived in the Fresno area. It's so hard to find a decent endo for thyroid disease. Where do you live? Take care, Shen wrote: > : > > Bummer. Guest guest
Hi - I don't know if Arem refers out but I was ready to fly to Texas to see him. Then I found my endo. Did you get that private email I sent you? My computer froze up so I'm not sure it went out. Guest guest
Hi - Yes! Glucophage is used for treating diabetes. I guess they discovered that it worked for infertility in PCOS by accident. If I remember right, an infertile diabetic patient with PCOS was put on it. She then got pregnant. So they went ahead and tried it with PCOS patients without diabetes and it worked. They don't know why. And the babies are born healthy. Anyhow, my endo told me that I'd probably be getting a whole bunch of literature from my insurance company about diabetes since I'm taking a diabetes drug. That's OK. There are several members of my extended family that have diabetes so it won't go to waste. And, who knows, I may need the info too someday. Guest guest
Just wanted to add that what the endo did notice was that I don't ovulate. In normally functioning women, there's a temperature spike when they ovulate. That doesn't happen with me. I have a pretty steady temperature for the first part of my cycle and then I have vague ups and downs for the rest. And I can't get pregnant. My doctor had me take another blood test today and I'll have another one next time I have an appt. after I've been on the Glucophage for a couple of months. Although he still is concerned about whether I'm in the normal range or not he mostly concentrates on the changes he sees in my lab levels and how I'm doing overall. Guest guest
- about your PCOS? Did it surprise you because you're hyper rather that hypo? How did they make the diagnosis? A few months ago several articles on PCOS appeared in some mainstream women's magazines and until I realized how much weight I'd lost and had a low TSH I figured that I was a candidate for several reasons. That first TSH testing also turned up a high glucose; a fasting test a few days later turned out normal. So I guess not. Good luck with it and take care, Fay Young ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! Juno now offers FREE Internet Access! Guest guest
Hi Fay- I have no thyroid gland. I was diagnosed with Graves' in 1987 and had RAI soon after. My thyroid was completely dead 6 years later even though that wasn't supposed to happen. There are many theories about why that happens regularly post-RAI with patients. I don't think it makes sense to blame it on the Graves' disease process when there are post-surgery and long-term ATD patients that still have some thyroid function whereas the longest post-RAI patient (that I've heard of) had a little function 12 years post-RAI (that was the only one after 10 years that I've heard of). Sorry about that painful run-on sentence. Anyways, I was kept hypothyroid for many years by my doctors and it wasn't until the last year that it was discovered. So I fall into the normal category of hypothyroid patients at risk for PCOS. He made the diagnosis based mostly on my clinical symptoms. My testosterone levels were a little on the high side but were still well within normal. Progesterone levels were low-normal. I've had a problem with acne post-RAI which is also a symptom and he's been having me take my temperature before I get out of bed in the morning and since it's pretty flat (no spike) and I can't get pregnant, he diagnosed me with PCOS. Take care, F Young wrote: > - about your PCOS? Did it surprise you because you're hyper rather > that hypo? How did they make the diagnosis? Guest guest
Hi Ann- Thankyou. I do have a beautiful boy that I was able to have after I took fertility drugs 4 1/2 years ago. So I've got lots of hope. Sometimes I just get mad because I've had all these problems all these years and, until recently, I couldn't get anyone to help me. The doctors were very quick to give me RAI but when I started having problems afterwards they'd blow me off. I've got lots of baggage there. Guest guest
Oh , You've been blessed with one child, how wonderful! I have never dealt with infertility, so cannot relate there, but can definitely relate to being blown off by doctors! I know now, after being diagnosed with Graves in April, that I have had this disease for nearly 4 years. And in that time, I was told by 1 doctor " theres nothing I can do for you " , and another " there's nothing physically wrong with you " . Finally by my third doc, was told " being a mom of young kids is quite stressful...we call it stressed out Mommy syndrome " ....I bought into this theory, as that is definitely what I felt like! So I went to counseling - and REFUSED anti-depressant meds, not because I don't believe in them, but I could not be convinced that my depression was my primary problem. That was in 1996, and now in 2000 I know it wasn't. Im certain I was in the beginning stages of Graves. Now, after 2 months of treatment for Graves, I am realizing that I'm not a stressed out Mommy, that I am enjoying my children immensely (and they me, as I am no longer having bouts of RAGE), and that all those doctors were wrong. I am a nurse, and one of the things I enjoy most is helping people stand up for their own health & rights in the medical process. To not just take an answer from a doctor and live with it, but to be sure that whatever you hear and decide to follow is the correct course for you. For 4 years I kept saying " somethings just not right " , and finally I am right! I never gave up, and I never gave in. Sorry, got off on a bit of a tangent, but you can see I'm passionate about this subject! Ann Will it never end? > > > > > Hi All- > > > > > > Just got back from the endo today. Guest guest
Hi Ann- I thought the exhaustion was because I was overworked too. I'd blame it on whatever I was doing. I always had something going on. When I was getting my bachelor's it was papers, mid-terms and finals. When I was doing my master's, it was teaching, presentations and my thesis. I was mid-way through that and had a baby so I thought that " Of course, I'm exhausted. I'm plodding through this master's while I have a baby and am breastfeeding him. That has to be it! " You can imagine my horror when I finished my master's, had stopped breastfeeding and the exhaustion got gradually worse (some would probably even say that I was depressed that I wasn't so busy-but I can't tell you how relieved I was that it was done-I just wanted to get out of there and be a Mommy). I no longer trust much that's supposed to be medically concrete anymore because I was told for years that the tiredness didn't have anything to do with my thyroid levels. Once I found an endo that checked nonstandard tests and took my clinical symptoms into account, he proved that it was a problem. They're so adamant about referring to lab tests only nowadays. I wish it'd be like the days when they'd listen to patients and take clinical symptoms into account. And use lab tests in conjunction with these other methods of diagnosis. There are many flaws in referring to lab tests as the only means of diagnosis. I hope you're doing pretty well now and that you have a doctor that listens to you. It's no fun to have to slog through the doctors that don't, muddle through and then be lucky enough to find one that does his/her best to get you well. Take care, " Ann McCrea, RN " wrote: > Oh , > You've been blessed with one child, how wonderful! Guest guest
Hi , Yes, thankfully I have found an Endo who, although he's a bit lacking in the warm-fuzzy-personality department, he does listen to me - prescribes according to how I feel (not just numbers) - and seems to honestly want to help me. I'm actually seeing my regular doc next week for my annual *stuff*, and I cannot wait to give him an earful about all this. The great thing is, in spite of telling me this was a Mommy syndrome, he is a great doctor. My husband has been in recently several times (auto accident), and each time our doc is more interested in how I'm doing than whats going on with dh! I think he's feeling bad that he missed Graves with me, and I plan to let him feel bad for quite some time :-). Thanks, Ann Ann McCrea, RN www.NavigateDreams.com Will it never end? > > > > > > > > > Hi All- > > > > > > > > > > Just got back from the endo today. Guest guest
>They're so adamant about referring to lab tests only nowadays. I'm a bad patient. I truly am. My doc insists my lab results are within normal range (which I'm sure they are!), however, I still have the racing heart from time to time, so I tell her that often (sometimes overplaying it, I'm afraid....), and insist on more blood tests. I want blood tests every month until this thing is well and truly gone. She *finally* got around to having the lab copy (for free!) my blood test results. Got them in the mail a couple of days ago. From what I can tell, it's looking pretty stable, that Free T4 number. It's been at the same normal range the last three tests. Perhaps I can ease up my assault on the bloodwork. Happy Friday, btw, everyone. Kari

Guest guest
Not sure. There was one number still in the " out of range " section, but i didn't recognize the name of it. The papers are at home...I'll have a look tonight. Kari RE: Will it never end? Kari: Is your TSH normal also? Guest guest
Hi Gang, some one somewhere decided that a certain range of numbers is the normal range for the thyroid. However, many of us do not feel well with thin that range. Some doctors rely absolutely on those numbers for diagnosis and the state of our health. The wiser ones know that some of us feel terrible within that range and treat us accordingly.
