Subject: Alfalfa and Auto-immune inflammatory disease

Prevention Guide March 2, 1999, page 87

Prevention reports that alfalfa [Medicago sativa] and alfalfa sprouts may

actually cause blood abnormalities (pancytipenia) in humans. In animal studies,

some monkeys that were fed 40% alfalfa sprout diet developed lupus. They

recommend that people that have lupus or a family history of lupus avoid

alfalfa. They also state there is no known medical benefit from alfalfa. It has

no benefit for treating rheumatism and arthritis.
