Guest guest
I try to send this out every day that I can to a few of my health lists. If y'all are interested I can include this list also. List owners/moderators: Would you like this every day (or every day I can)? It is important to "know your numbers" for these risk factors, so that you can take preventative steps to reduce your risk of heart disease. Get regular checkups and be sure to have your cholesterol level tested, as well as your other vital numbers checked. Those are: blood pressure, blood sugars, weight and Body Mass Index (BMI), and waist-to-hip ratio. It’s better to be proactive than reactive. (I have never heard of the waist-to-hip ratio before ~J) Stuck in an exercise rut? Just because you have a regimen, it doesn't have to be routine. The more different kinds of activity you do, the greater the odds you'll find a way to exercise and not get bored. Switching between exercises may also reduce the risk of injuries from repeated stress on the same parts of the body. And, variety means that regardless of changing seasons, locales, availability of exercise buddies, etc., you're more likely always to find a way to keep exercising. With a few almost invisible substitutions, you can boost fiber and eat healthier. Research shows that people who eat regular servings of whole grains -- such as whole wheat, bran and brown rice -- have a significantly reduced risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Try buckwheat pancakes at breakfast instead of regular; use at least half whole-wheat flour in any recipe that calls for flour; mix bran flakes in whenever a recipe calls for breadcrumbs. Research suggests that lycopene, a substance found in tomatoes, may play a role in lowering men's odds of developing prostate cancer. Cooked tomato products, such as tomato sauce, are particularly healthful. Cooking breaks down tomato cell walls and releases the lycopene, making it easier for the body to absorb. A 2001 study by the National Foundation for Cancer Research found men with prostate cancer who ate one entree with tomato sauce per day for three weeks before surgery had a significant decrease in prostate tissue damage after their operations.
