Guest guest
Both myself and my husband are new to the SCD diet. My husband has had UC for 17 years and has kept it somewhat under control with 6MP, Asacol, and Lomotil. He always believed the doctors who told him diet did not cause UC, but can aggravate it. He existed mainly on breads, pretzels, pepsi, gummi bears, and processed meats. I told him I'd go on the diet and work out the kinks and cook for him if he'd try it. He's having difficulty. He doesn't want to do the intro diet because he says it's a " hospital diet " . He also has oral allergy syndrome which causes the mouth and lips and throat to swell up when raw foods or nuts are eaten. (Are pecans supposed to be less allergenic than almonds?) He's been eating bananas, cheese, SCD legal meats, and the occasional cooked vegetable for the last week. He has sugar-free bacon daily (I told him it's a once a week thing). He has more diarrhea now than when he started the diet a week ago. I purchased 3 recipe books for the SCD and have had about 50% success with the recipes. My husband is used to snacking throughout the day. Advice on what he can eat would be greatly appreciated. I was also wondering about yeast/bacteria die off. Does that happen and if so, when and what are the symptoms?
Guest guest
The intro diet is very very helpful. I went into the diet at first eating what I wanted, very advanced foods and it didn't help. 24 hours after starting the intro diet, I was off pain meds. It was actually overnight success for me (I have CD). I stayed intro a little longer than most because everything I added caused problems until about 2 months into the diet. If he would take a weekend to do the intro, it wouldn't be so bad. He really has to be 100% committed to get real results from the diet. Slow and steady wins the race. My intro diet consisted of chicken soup with just the carrots blended back into the soup, geletin made with Welch's grape juice, hard boiled eggs, colby jack cheese, and tropicana pure premium no pulp OJ. I tried the cheesecake and it didn't agree with me. Also, it was over a month before I could tolerate even the smallest amounts of yogurt. After a week, I blended all the veggies back into the soup. From the beginning, I added salt, pepper, and chili powder to the soup to make it palatable. Other cooked meats were easy for me to add. You could always cook a turkey breast or roast and bring it to a butcher for them to cut into sliced meat (like sandwhich meat) and roll that up with a lettuce leaf or a crepe with homemade mayo, mustard and a slice of cheese so make a mock sandwich. Really though, 100% adherence to the diet is necessary for it to work. I speak from experience. Now I consider "illegal" foods as foods that will hurt me and cause me pain and suffering. It is so wonderful to be pain free and off meds. I do have setbacks from time to time when I eat a hidden illegal or something too advanced for my system but they were nothing like before the diet and I bounce back very quickly. If your husband isn't keen on the idea of eating homemade yogurt, www.lucyskitchen.com sales a legal acidophilus supplement. She sales other legal supplements too. I currently use acidophilus, B Complex and the multivitamin and have been very happy with them. If your husband is leary, have him write to the group. We all have personal experiences with SCD, illegals, and ups and downs and can help as much as possible. Plenty of people on here have UC and can better help you than I can since CD and UC are similar but very different. I wish you and your husband a lot of luck on the diet. If you haven't found it yet, visit http://www.pecanbread.com/new/scdfoods1.html#beyond for foods that are easily tolerated for many after the intro phase of the diet. There are also a list of recipes that are within the stage guidelines of the site. BTVC doesn't have any guidelines for introducing foods, this site is maintained by the mother's of autistic children and they have found that this gradual introduction of foods is easiest on most system, but doesn't work for everyone. It worked great for me. I'm currently 8 months into the diet and am on Stage 2. Another site with good recipes is http://www.scdrecipe.com/recipes/. No sugar added bacon can be enjoyed daily. The restriction was on bacon with sugar added to it. You can search within the group for information regarding die off or Google it. It is kind of different for everyone depending on what and how much bad bacteria you have in your system. Please feel free to ask the group any questions you like. Hopefully many will answer with their different perspectives on the diet. Guest guest
Thank you to everyone who replied. When my husband started the diet, he said he had no diarrhea. Then, when he started it, he started getting some diarrhea. Today, he said he has started bleeding again. I kept telling him he needs to do the intro diet first, then add foods slowly. This morning, I got kinda mad at him and told him he may as well quit the diet because it's not going to work for him, not the way he's going about it. Before I began the diet, I told him I'd cook for him, but I didn't realize how much work it is. I can handle the diet for just me, but he is very particular about what he eats. He comes home and says things like " I can't see how eating foods that make me allergic can be good for me " and " Three days on the intro diet aren't going to make any difference " . He says he can't eat fruit or nuts, and cottage cheese and hard boiled eggs make him gag. After I got angry with him this morning and was ready for him to go back to his old ways to eating, he said he'd try the intro diet. I told him I will join him on the intro (I guess I've been a hypocite not doing the intro diet myself). I've been on the diet for 3 weeks now. He had scrambled eggs with me this morning and started making gelatin with grape juice. It frustrates me that he won't even read the book. He's a grown man, but won't take responsibility for his diet. I keep telling him I hope he's doing the diet for HIM, not for me. But, he still says things like " Will you be mad at me if I cheat on the diet? " I counter with " It's your body and you're the one who has to live in it. " I haven't lived with UC, so I'm probably not understanding all of the underlying issues involved. Am I being too hard on him? > > Both myself and my husband are new to the SCD diet. Guest guest
Well, kind of...Since, like you say, it's his body. This is a very codependent stance. I know, because I was involved with addicts for a long time, and did the same thing. Cajoled, nagged, pressed, argued, yelled, manipulated, left the "preferred" reading material on the coffee table...You're right --he's a grown man, he can read, he can cook, he can make choices. Like all types of addicts, he may have to hit "rock bottom" before he makes a choice for his health. And even then, it might be one different than you would make.I know it's excruciating to watch a person destroy, and refuse to heal, their body. But cajoling, etc, just doesn't fit. He will make the choice that fits for him, when it fits for him. It's very hard, but there's not much you can do about an adult holding different opinions and making different choices. Guest guest
For Pete's sake! I would send him home to his Mamma, since he is obviously not a grown up yet.I would tell him that if he wants to get sick and end up in the hospital and jeopardize your family and finances, that's his choice. Taking care of his health is something that he does because he loves you and wants to feel better so you can have a good life and not end up with surgery. My 18 year old son read the book and even cooks alot of his own food now, tell him to grow up. Tell him to stop being a whiny baby and take care of himself!! You are NOT his mother And the world doesn't revolve around HIM.Sorry, I'm a red-headed Irish woman and there is nothing worse than a man being a baby. lolkay-lynn.When you row another person across the river, you get there yourself..- Fortune cookieSubject: Re: New to Diet - What to Eat?To: BTVC-SCD Date: Wednesday, September 10, 2008, 11:10 AM Thank you to everyone who replied. Guest guest
If you need some snacks, try the sandwich bread and homemade jelly and/or peanut butter. The sandwich bread also makes for a great bacon cheeseburger (make sure the bacon is CRISP). The sandwich bread is on youtube under SCD sandwich bread.Sorry for the rant earlier, but this diet is hard enough when someone is cooperating, I can't imagine what's it like for you. Guest guest
my advice........some of the intro diet foods are not good for me and cause me to bleed......like chicken! Nuts are advanced anyway and my SCd daughter is allergic to all fruit right now because she has a yeast overgrowth. I never did intro myself.......until about two years out....and it still was not the final answer.......it takes time and trial and error........to find the right combo of foods that are legal and work for you. In my experience, the food that he can not live without might be the trigger for the bleeding and " d " that has returned. For myself, symptoms can be turned on and off with triggers and it is just a tough learning curve. It seems a bit harsh to me to say he will never heal if he does not do intro.......... just my opinion. Michele
Guest guest
Hey! Welcome to the group. I have some words of wisdom for you-- you can't make your husband do this. This diet is a hundred percent, every minute of every day, commitment. I've been on it for 10 months and still have temptations and trials. If he wont read the book and complains about what he can eat, this may not be for him. For me it was a no brainer-- I can live with my symptoms and I have attained remission with it. When I eat outside of the diet I hurt and I bleed. When I follow the diet I can achieve a normal life. I've only had UC for 10 months, but for me it is for life. Maybe after so many years of UC he is tired of trying something " new " . But he has to be ready for it or it won't work, its not a miracle cure, it has to be done long term with consistency to work, and if he isn't into it, it won't work, as he will cheat even if not on purpose by not reading a label or eating out and not paying attention. I truly wish you good luck. My hubby has health problems (not GI) and I realized long ago that I can't make him do what I want or whats best for him.
