Guest guest
Adding different cheese *with DCCC* and butter everywhere I could, making yogurt into every kind of topping/sauce I could think of with different herbs and spices to top meats, chicken, fish. Also at night either banana pancakes with honey (I did two bananas to one egg) or 1 T. dripped french cream, farmer's cheese, nut butter with honey and cinnamon--kind of like an SCD sundae. I kept chicken soup in the fridge to snack on--I gained back fast. Lemon curd; SCD cheesecake. I know in the archives, Carol F. had tons of easy recipes for weight gain. Mini muffins with real butter if tolerated for snacks. Raman Prasad's latest cookbook is great for variety. The basic recipes in the BTVC are good go-to's. I love pecan butter--especially cooked on acorn squash and muffins made with it. Pecan butter anything is good. Hope I gave you some ideas to go on. I know wizop will have good recipes/ideas. It seems like you kind of go to your normal weight and stay because people losing seem to lose and people trying to gain eventually gain. I did really well keeping the cheesecake and chicken soup in the fridge as a go-to as weird as that is and I'm not sure how a kid would like it. You'll get lots of input, good luck, Debbie 39 cd
Guest guest
Kathy, What is your daughter eating -- and what does she currently tolerate? That will give us some clues about what to suggest. (Does no good to suggest butter on everything if she has trouble with fats, for instance!) I am finding that SCD is normalizing my weight. But after the initial surge of weight loss (I am still obese instead of being morbidly obese), I do have to use care with calorie counting and exercise levels. As well as staying very strict. If I stray, even if my stool no longer shows the issue, I stop losing weight. I suspect something could be the case with gaining weight, as well. Doctors are obsessed with weight. My GP dismissed the early symptoms of my cancer as " Just lose some weight and it'll clear up. " Fortunately, I insisted on seeing a gynecologist who properly diagnosed it. When I saw the pain management specialist, one of the first things out of her mouth was that my weight was a major factor in my pain issues. I looked at her and said, " In the last seven years, I have lost 180 pounds. " (To her credit, she blinked, and said, " That's very good. Keep it up. " She did not, however, have an explanation for why the pain issues started after I had lost 100 of the 180 pounds.) One thing you might do is get a free account at FitDay.Com and keep track of her calories in (food) and calories out (hockey). You might find she is exercising more than you think, and she may need to up portions of tolerated legal foods. (I'd offer her about 10 pounds, but I can't figure out how to transfer it....) — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
Guest guest
I have lost unnecessary pounds (about 30 of them) and my son (3.75 yrs; very active) has only gained. He was actually a big guy to begin with, so after continuing to gain for the first several months, his weight has now stabilized at "normal". We intentionally eat lots of fat --lots of food in general, for that matter.Marilyn: Welcome back We were all good! Thought of you while the weather was going crazy --very glad to hear you survived it well. Very sorry to hear about the damage and smell, though. Kudos on the *amazing* weight loss, too!! You're one of the people that amaze the world re: motivation and endurance!Baden_
Guest guest
Kathy. First of all, you are doing an awesome job.!! Second of all, I can tell by the tone of your email that you feel the Dr. is in charge and if she doesn't gain enough weight to suit him you will be FORCED to do drug therapy. I'm not sure what puts parents of this path of letting someone else tell them (or threaten them) with what should be done with their child's health. Since he apparantly doesn't care about what has been working and is not interested in listening or communicating, I would seriously find another doctor. All doctors are NOT created equal by any stretch of the imagination! YOU are the Mother........... and YOU will decide who you want to be your partner in your child's healthcare. Funny thing is, people don't realize their doctors can be fired. They can, and this one should. You have enough to worry about without having to please some doctor based on his less than adequate communication skills. Of course, that's just my opinion... as an hot headed irish woman, but I don't take any crap from people who make no sense.. and won't' listen! Guest guest
sorry if i missed earlier posts in this thread and if this testimonial is going to be redundant, but after finally being able to tolerate nut butter, I started gaining weight, like 30+ lbs and I was seemingly in much worse shape as I was about 100lbs. and was bed ridden not playing sports..now I overdid it with the nut butters and wasn't able to exercise and my thyroid and adrenals went out in the meantime so don'dramatic gaint frighten you, but what I mean to say is that the veterans often encourgaed that once one can tolerate nuts items, that weight would return and my experience has reinforced this...so maybe you could encourage her to eat more cashew butter? This is the one that really helped me and in the butter form as nut flours don't agree with me but for some reason my body can assimilate the fats and pass the butters...maybe give it a go? -------------- Original message -------------- > Any tips on how to gain weight on this diet? On scd, she wasn't losing but she wasn't gaining. Everyone said, first she has to heal, then the weight will come. But after months of high-fat scd foods, still no weight or growth. Finally, her pediatrician pointed out that since she still had inflammation, all her calories were being used to fight the inflammation. I switched GIs at the same time, and this new, wonderful doc agreed that inflammation was the issue and prescribed lialda-a relatively new anti inflammatory. (We had been using entocort and pentassa which did very little if anything at this point) Three months later, normal sed-rate, normal CRP and best of all, 10 lb weight gain and 1 inch growth!! I agree with kay lynn--switch doctors!!! Guest guest
She is having for breakfast: (we say this is a breakfast for a queen) pancakes or eggs with toast with butter (yes, butter is ok for her) yogurt with a banana bacon water for lunch; stew, soup, chili or some type of meat applesauce fruit cobble water dinner; meat cooked veggie starting to try salads fruit cobbler snack; applesauce or banana, dried fruit, or fruit cobbler So all day, she is having mostly meats or eggs, veggies, yogurt and cooked fruits (plus sometimes toast for breakfast). She hasn't done well with uncooked cheese, but if it is in a cooked meal it is ok. We haven't done very well with juices, so it's been all water. We are starting to try, gradually, smoothies. She did have trouble with them early on, so we were kind of afraid to have them. She had one last night and it was fine. We did sooooooooooo many muffins early on that she just got SICK of them. But, I am thinking we need them............do you think so? Thanks for everyone's input. Marilyn, any suggestions? And welcome back. We missed you. Guest guest
We put butter on her toast and veggies, but not a ton. I wouldn't say she has lots of fat. What are you having when you say you eat lots of fat? How much butter are you using and what are you putting it on? Thanks for your response! Guest guest
I use coconut oil, ghee, olive oil and meat fat. When I make soup, I saute the onions first in fat (usually meat fat, eg. the stuff that comes to the top of a bone broth), then add everything else. Just before it finishes cooking, I add a big wad of ghee, too. When I make "cake", I throw at least 1/4 cup of fat (ghee or coconut oil) into a single loaf pan. (That's not very much fat, but it helps build our quantities.)For a veggie-egg scramble with one egg, I add about 1/4 cup of butter. When I make a salmon, we bake it with a lot of ghee inside the cavity and also eat all the fatty skin. After I've cooked a chicken, I take all the skin and fatty parts with a bit of meat, whir it altogether into a pate. We've both been known to eat 2-3 tablespoons of coconut oil straight off a spoon. We eat nuts almost daily. We pour olive oil onto salads, cooked veggies, etc.Just big globs everywhere! LOL.Today I cycled quite a few kilometers and have been tossing the stuff back since.Caution: Some people don't do well with fats, and many do bestl to increase its dosages carefully, as with all foods.Baden_
Guest guest
--butter on everything that it can possibly go on (my dd can go through about 1/2 stick just eating a breakfast of scd pancaked [that inclues what I cook them in]) --how does she do w. nut butters? We make a nice, high-calorie smoothie/ice cream w. frozen ripe bananas and peanut butter. It's amazing how good it tastes w. just those two ingredients. --yogurt okay? If so, make it with heavy cream. It will be expensive, but yummy and oh-so-caloric --my dd's GI dr. said we could tell the diet was working for her b/c she began to gain weight so well after losing for so long before she was dx'ed w. Crohn's. So I would def. agree w. other posters that she may still be having inflammation issues.....Curcumin? (The tumeric extract that is supposed to be so helpful for IBD inflammation) Good luck, Ellen 10 y/o dd scd since 5/06 for Crohn's 3 more days until off of all meds
Guest guest
Kathy, Your daughter's certainly doing well with variety, and that's super! Now the question is -- how do the amounts of all these things stack up against her activity and probable growth levels? How much does that doc of yours think she should weigh in around 4 months, anyway? To gain one pound per week, she needs to consume 3500 calories more each week than she expends in all her running around, sports, studying, etc. If she isn't doing that, she isn't going to gain -- and, as I have noted with my weight-loss issues, if there's inflammation, I won't lose. I think it's reasonable that while your daughter's body is fighting the disease, she will be slower to gain weight than a normal girl would be. WRT the drugs -- sometimes drugs are needful to get over a hump, but your daughter's obviously doing so well. After all, pred-pounds aren't healthy! (One wonders if perhaps there's a bit of annoyance on the doc's part because your daughter's doing so well -- and he actually has had little to do with the improvement.) Baden has some good hints and tips for adding in extra fat. Contrary to what we've been handed the last 50-60 years, Fat (good fat) is our friend, not our enemy. So did Ellen and others. I still recommend logging food amounts / calories and activity levels and see what you come up with. She may just need to eat a little more of what she's already eating. FYI, when I began eating raw salads, I found it helpful to take a acidophilus capsule with my salad and/or use a yogurt-based dressing like my ranch dressing with it. The probiotic seemed to make it more digestible for me. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
Guest guest
I gain weight with honey, cheese, nut flours, etc.........the ratio of these foods alone equals my weight on SCD......I actually struggle to lose now that things are more healed! When I first went on SCD I lost to my smallest ever........almost to underweight for my height.....now I am just a bit above ideal......
