Hi,

I had suggested the homemade root beer. In seaching, I found that sassafrass, which is used to make it is outlawed. And, you are 100% right that they don't have legal extracts in the store. You might try contacting these people to see what ingredients are in their extract.

Here is the wiki definition of caramel color. I would say DEFINATELY NO it is not legal since it starts with sugar.

Caramel coloring is caramel used as a food coloring; it is made by controlled heating of sugar, generally in the presence of acids or alkalis and possibly other compounds, a process called caramelization. Unlike caramel candy, it tends towards maximum oxidation of the sugar to produce a caramel

concentrate that is unpalatable in its raw liquid form. Its color ranges from dark brown to black.

Hope this helps,

Someone suggested getting rootbeerextract and mixing with honey and soda to make my own...great ideaexcept that I cannot find legal rootbeer extract anywhere. I also wasasking if carmel color was SCD legal and no one responded to thisquestion several days ago - am I really the only one who misses dietcoke? Again I ask is there certain sodas that would be illegal and ifnot does anyone have a rootbeer extract source and and a ratio recipefor this? Thanks guys for your help.

Hello!

You're not alone in missing Diet Coke. :) I believe Elaine addresses this in

BTVC. Doesn't

she say we can have one diet soda per week?

I'm hoping to try it sometime!

Aiazeen,

You can mix grape juice with sparkling water for a nice treat.

I made root beer from scratch last summer and it was good. You need to

find yourself some sassafras trees and dig up the root as you cannot

buy it anywhere assuming you're in the USA. You need the root bark for

the soda. I used the book " Homemade Root Beer Soda and Pop " by

Cresswell as my guide. Use wikipedia to learn about sassafras.

If you brew your own, I'd suggest that you use a bottom-fermenting

yeast. I use Saflager S-23 from northernbrewer.com. The

top-fermenting, or ale yeasts are too similiar or the same as baker's

yeast which is SCD illegal. It seems that some other yeast's are okay

as the official BTVC website says that mead is legal " If homemade and

ingredients are honey and yeast, commercial is likely to have sugar

added and is illegal "

Does anyone out there have any words on yeast kinds directly from Elaine?

Cheers,

Stocker

We make a good and easy ginger ale. I just take 2 organic ginger root

tea bags, steep in 1 1/2 cups hot boiling water for a few minutes. I

add honey to the tea (Add according to your taste...but, we usually add

about 1/2 to 3/4 cup honey). Mix the honey in until disolved. This

mixure is good to make 3 to 4 large glasses of soda. I pour about 1/2

C. of the ginger/honey into the bottom of a large glass, add sparkling

water and ice. Delicious and refreshing! I then keep the rest of the

tea mixture in the frig of the next time my son (or I) wants a soda.
