Guest guest
I started the diet in Feb and am converted. Can’t imagine going back to the old ways and I’ve learned so much on this diet!. In July the colonoscopy confirmed UC was still active and my doctor actually said to me that he didn’t think this diet was working for me. Hmmm…. He switched me from asacol (I have a history of lymphoma so that limits my medication options) to Lialda (mesalamine) and added rowasa. The rowasa has helped. The standard intro diet from BTVC didn’t work for me. I don’t tolerate dairy well, so the DCCC, cheesecake, and eggs were a problem. Bananas are a problem for me (as it was w/ my mom) and I react to Welch’s grape juice. The chicken soup and chicken were fine. So my start was rough—trying to figure this all out has taken some time. I feel good—my lifestyle isn’t stopped by UC-- but the persistent D hasn’t stopped since I started this diet! It seems to be a problem with many on this diet and I’m wondering why. Guest guest
Donna, >> my doctor actually said to me that he didn’t think this diet was working for me. Hmmm…. << Well, of course not. It's not something he controls. While some doctors are genuinely interested in helping their patients get well by whatever means -- and those doctors are jewels without price -- too many are control freaks who denigrate anything they aren't in charge of. >> The standard intro diet from BTVC didn’t work for me. << Me either. I couldn't find DCCC (didn't until after I had been on SCD for four years!) and didn't have the energy to make yogurt. So my intro diet was (and is) an every two hours snack of baked meat, then steamed zucchini, then baked meat, then steamed zucchini, then soft boiled eggs, then steamed zucchini, then baked meat.... you get the picture. I couldn't find a legal cider, and grape juice, even diluted, gave me the runs. (Still does, actually.) I was OK with the Tropicana Original no-pulp orange juice, although some people have trouble with citru at the beginning of the diet. >> I feel goodmy lifestyle isn’t stopped by UC-- but the persistent D hasn’t stopped since I started this diet! << How long have you had UC? While some lucky people experience almost immediate cessation of symptoms, the majority of us poor slobs have to struggle along, moving three steps forward and two steps back. >> It seems to be a problem with many on this diet and I’m wondering why. << Healing by nutrition takes time. I had almost immediate (well, within 3-4 months) reduction in the urgency and soft, mushy stool. But it took several years before I was having what I could call a normal-normal stool. Now I'm working on the other aspect of my disease: obesity caused by malabsorption. That's going to take awhile. I was close to 300 pounds over my proper weight. I've lost 180, and have 110 - 120 to go. I'm patient -- after 25 years of urgency and soft, mushy stool, gut aches, diarrhea, social embarrassment with accidents, my current years on SCD are nothing. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund

Guest guest
I rarely suffer from D, as long as I'm doing SCD Legal yogurt or probiotics, and I don't over do the Mag I take for soft tissue pain. When it is an issue(like when I mess up on the prior) I have great luck eating very ripe organic bananas. These need to be spotted with a fair amount of black for this fruit to do it's magic. This works for me, even when transit time is very short.
Guest guest
I’ve never tried this. Is this commonly used in conjunction w/ SCD? Guest guest
Marilyn, Thanks for the info on your intro diet. I tolerate baked meat, steamed zucchini, and chicken soup well. I’ve had UC for 11 years. For the first 9 it was mild-moderate. Once or twice a year I‘d get a flare and would get over it within a couple of months. D was limited to times of flare. Never had to take steroids until a year and a half ago when I had my first real setback—loss a lot of weight, hospitalized, etc. Took me a while to recover. Colonoscopy then showed that the colon was fully involved. So the fact that the colonoscopy this summer only showed 1/3rd involvement was a good sign to me, but the doctor wouldn’t acknowledge it. Also, as an aside, my bone density was worsening these past few years and we delayed med’s for it until this summer’s round of bone density. Great rebound. My bone density went back to the counts from a few years ago. I attribute this to the SCD diet! No med’s needed. You lost 180—congratulations. Sounds like you’re a fighter, and survivor!
