Guest guest
I looked into the acid/alkaline content of food back when I was starting SCD. I was learning to cope with a candida overgrowth and my new diagnosis of Interstitial Cystitis along with my digestive dysfunctions, and it seemed like something I might need to address. I tried a supplement that was supposed to help increase alkalinity, but it made things a whole lot worse, so I stopped using it. After a few weeks of trying to balance the acid and alkaline content of my foods, I gave up. It was just too much to worry about at that time; I thought I'd come back to this issue again if I was still having problems. But, I never have needed to look at this again. I think eating a variety of SCD foods balances things out. I do eat meats, but I eat more veggies. I do have fruits, but some of them become alkaline during digestion, which balances things nicely. So, just by staying on SCD, and eating a decent variety of allowed foods, I'm getting a nice balance of acids and alkalines without having to tax my tired brain [grin]. Kim M. Guest guest
Hi Kim M, It would be interesting for me to understand some of the science behind it. And why perhaps this acid/alkaline balance is different in SCD. I believe part of it has to do with proper gut dysbiosis. Also, grains are incredibly acidic. Just thought there might be some data out there. Guest guest
Jodi It is interesting to consider the acid/alkaline balance issue. What is really fascinating to me is that by just paying attention to how my digestion is working and ignoring the acid/alkaline food lists, I've ended up combining foods at a meal that balance each other in this area. In other words, by just sticking to the SCD-permitted foods, especially over time, we can get exactly the right balance of foods. Elaine and Dr. Haas were certainly right on target. Several helpful lists I found several years ago when I was looking into this (to help my Interstitial Cystitis mainly) was: http://www.trans4mind.com/nutrition/pH.html http://preventdisease.com/fitness/nutrition/articles/acid_base_chart.h tml Hope the links come through; you may have to retype them. Or Google acid alkaline foods. I came across a number of similar lists at different sites, so you can probably find it in many variations. There are actually two processes you have to consider when looking at acid/alkaline foods. Those that are naturally acidic or alkaline and don't change during digestion -- and those foods that change during the digestive process and become more acidic or more alkaline. A prime example of the foods that change during digestion is orange juice. When you swallow orange juice it's acidic, but it becomes alkaline during digestion. Gets complicated, right?? What is interesting is that on SCD there's a good balance in our allowed foods between acidic and alkaline. Another interesting fact is that a lot of highly acidic or highly alkaline forming foods (those that change during digestion) aren't allowed on SCD. We end up getting a bood balance of foods, those that don't tax our gut ecology too much. There's also a number of books on the subject. I know I found some books at my local library on this topic, but don't recall the titles. If I can find the titles again, I'll post them. Kim M.
