Guest guest
, that is the best news I've seen in months!! I think it might be MY rant that you were referring to.. LOLYou are doing a fabulous job!! I am so so happy that you found a Dr that will work WITH you and not against you. You might want to post his name for other who are in your area that are trying to find the same kind of wonderful care. Please keep us informed on how it's going!.. Thank you for posting this!Kay-lynn18 yr son, UC May 08, SCD July 08.AsacolWhen you row another person across the river, you get there yourself..- Fortune cookieSubject: Integrative DoctorsTo: BTVC-SCD Date: Wednesday, September 10, 2008, 9:41 PM Hi All, I noticed the recent discussion (under "gaining weight") regarding doctors and that they (notoriously) do not support the SCD (or, at least, blow it off). I know, personally, we have been trying to convince our GI that SCD is actually a very legitiment treatment for our son's CD. We even printed out info from the BTVC site explaining the diet, gave our doc examples of 's daily food diary, etc. Our doc took the info and simply filed it away. I doubt he has ever referred back to it. We continued to do our own thing with SCD, and have been going for monthly follow-up visits. I was really starting to feel it was a waste of our time since we were on different pages. He (clearly) is a "meds are the only way" kind of guy. Then, at our last visit, after our son's bad reaction (and 8 lbs weight LOSS) on Imuran, he suggested our only two options were Remicade (uhhh...I don't think so!), and/or a feeding tube. Interestingly, our doc mentioned CD treatments in Europe rely on nutrition (via some kind of drink, or through a tube). He indicated that it has proven quite successful. I left the appointment shaking my head, and thinking the best option might be a feeding tube. HOWEVER, I posted my question about feeding tubes on this board and received GREAT feedbakc...thanks everyone! We have decided to fore go the tube and are JUST going "nutritional" ...which is exactly what we were doing before all the meds messed our son up even more (just my opinion)! I agree with what one poster said about taking control of our kid's (and our own) health, and not letting docs "force" us in to things. There is part of me that feels like I "have" to do what the doctor says. BUT, I am learning the hard way, this is not SO! I need to advocate for my child, and do what I think is right...despite the guidance of my doc. Anyway, all of this to say, we have finally located another doctor who already seems so helpful! We have located an Integrative Doctor (MD) who incorporates alternative and medical treatment into her practice. Actually, we have already had our son there twice in the last week, and we are so very happy! The practice is family medicine ( not a GI), but they are very knowledgable about the whole body and how to treat it. They are very supportive of the SCD and are working with us as we explore alternative treatments. Their attitude is also one of victory (unlike our GI who said our son will be on meds his whole life, feel sick off and on, and have surgeries). Our new doctor seems quite confident that we can lick CD! Wow!! Another great thing is this doc takes our insurance and can do all sorts of blood tests (in fact, our son is being testing for a bunch of things...they want to treat my whole child...not just his GI tract!). We are pretty happy, and cautiously optimistic. At this point, I am even wondering if we need a GI. Though, I am sort of afraid NOT to have one...not sure why... In some respects, I want to demonstrate our son's success (through alternative means) to our GI to maybe help open his eyes so he can help others in the future. I am proabbly being unrealistic, though. Anyway, I just wanted to share our story, and pass on integrative docs as an "alternative! That's lucky that she takes your insurance, because I've noticed that many of them seem not to, which makes the whole thing even harder. Guest guest
, Where do you live and what is your doctor's name. That's lucky that she takes your insurance, because I've noticed that many of them seem not to, which makes the whole thing even harder. Mara We live in the Denver, CO area and we are going to Clear Sky Medical. The doctor's name is Dr. Katya Meier, MD and she is located in Lone Tree (for anyone living in the Denver area). Her number is . On another note, I have been trying to find an Integrative Doc that would take our insurance with no luck. UNTIL, I spoke with another person (who successfully beat CD through natural remedies) via email. She recommended a product called Standard Process (SP). So, I looked into it, but discovered it is not SCD compliant. Anyway, before I knew this, I went to the Standard Process website and clicked on providers (as this supplement is only available through health care providers). After contacting the rep in my area, he gave me the name of Clear Sky Medical. I had never heard of them before, and they are near where I live! So, maybe searching the provider list on the Standard Process site " might " yield some results for others not in Denver. It seemed there were a lot of chiropractors on the list, as well as nutritionists. BUT, when I aksed for a doctor, the local SP rep was able to give me a name! Since SP is a natural remedy, I sort of figured that if a medical professional carried it, they had to be integrative, and it turned out to be true! I hope others are able to have some luck as well... DS 11 yo CD Jan 08 SCD Jan

Guest guest
Crystal what city are you in?You don't necessarily have to be worried about investigating the hospital option.Ask to speak to the doctors, and make sure you will be working with someone who will be committed to helping you, even if you hit roadblocks.Make sure they know that you want someone who is plugged into ALL of the latest research going on (confirm this with the doctor), and who is aware of what's going on in the integrative world. You may not find the perfect solution in the short term, but many doctors ARE competent, caring, and will guide you through the problem solving process if you let them.Just take it slow, do some interviewing, and keep your eyes open. Please help me!My parents want to hospitalize me and I know that the doctors with mess me up more as they have put me on 3 antibiotic treatments for SIBO and my gut is now leaky!
