Freezing veggies and fruit

I saved the instructions that were offered on how to freeze fruits and

veggies, but I was unsure why the items needed to be laid out on a pan

and frozen before putting in containers? Why can you not just put the

items into the containers and avoid this step? Thanks for the

clarification.
