My son has to go back to the hospital for tests and gain weight. He

hates TPN with PIC line. He is under weight. He was diagnosed with

Crohn's January of this year, done very well with no symptoms until

now. His stomach is queasy and aching in the AM. He stills eats

well. He eats mostly beans, cheese, yogurt, veggies and fruit -

vegetarian. Dietician at hospital says there are supplement drinks he

could take - but not SCD legal with sugar, she is looking for

healthiest drink. any suggestions for high calorie/nutritious foods

that are SCD legal to help him. Thank you for your suggestions.

Need to have him start eating meat, free range and organic, that will put weight on him.No meat = anemic, no weight gain. Poor guy, how old is he. Hard enough to eat scd without meat. Children needs the vitamin and nutrients from meat. Part of of the food pyramid says meat, balanced meal, veggies. fat from meat. I guess test are what you want, it can be so easy to add meat to his diet.JAHSCD 4 yearshttp://www.glutenfreeeugene.org/xl2/scd.htmlSubject: Suggestions for More Calories/Nutrition and Staying on SCD DietTo: BTVC-SCD Date: Saturday, October 4, 2008, 9:00 AMMy son has to go back to the hospital for tests and gain weight. It's true. I am doing much better on SCD since I added meat 2 months

ago. I was vegetarian for 22 yrs so it was very hard for me eat it at

first, too. I'm finally gaining weight now though!

I started with fish (salmon, tilapia), then introduced beef and chicken.

Homemade yogurt made with 10% cream is also helping me to gain.

,If he can tolerate nuts, that might make a big difference. It certainly did for me--very rapid weight gain when I started on nuts. However, I cannot tolerate nuts unless I soak for 7-10 hours in warm salted water then dehydrate for about 12 hours at 150 degrees in oven or dehydrator. That process makes the nuts more digestible by removing the enzyme inhibitors. Start with nut butters, then move on to flours as tolerated. Also add more fats (butter, coconut oil, etc) to increase calories if he is active and growing.Sending lots of good healing thoughts for your son."Any suggestions for high calorie/nutritious foodsthat are SCD legal to help him. My daughter started putting on weight when we realized she wasn't having many breads. We overdid on the muffins early on, so much that she got sick of them. Then we went to the extreme of not having them at all.

We now make sure she has some type of bread/muffin with every meal and she quickly put on 2-3 pounds.

I don't remember (sorry!), did you tell us why Ben is

vegetarian?

It would really help if he were willing to do eggs and meats.

Is he OK with coconut oil? Other oils? Butter or ghee? How about

avocados?

He does eat eggs. He also eats coconut oil, olive oil and butter. Just not

meat. His choice and I am trying to honor his wishes, but it is very

difficult. Thanks.

And I do think it is wonderful that you are honoring his wishes. I am

very glad that he will eat eggs and cheese. How about avocados?

When I was recovering from my surgery, I made a " tomato soup "

with 12 ounces of tomato juice, some steamed zucchini (and other

vegetables: this is a great way to use up leftover small amounts of

vegetables), a capful of E-lyte (for electrolytes), some basil, and a

couple of hard boiled eggs. I blended the juice and cooked veggies, then

dropped the (peeled) egg in chunks and blended it in. Makes a couple of

good sized mugs of very thick soup. You might add a tablespoon or two of

healthy oils to it.

You could also consider and avocado and banana smoothie, again with added

healthy oils, a drizzle or two of tolerated juice, and a bit of ice,

whirled up in the blender. (Great way to use up those bananas which are

so ripe they're hard to peel.)

You dont say how old your son is. Maybe he needs to come on to this group if he is old enough to make his decision on not to eat meat, maybe he needs to do his own support group. If he choose not to eat meat , then he will have to go through more grueling test at the hospital. Life an death situation, he is wasting away. If you look back to the the caveman diet, they ate from the land, meat, veggies and fruit. People need meat, does he want to live. Does he like not gaining weight, sick going to the hospital for more test. Has he seen a shrink? He needs help, or just do the test and stay sick, the balls in his court.JAHSCD 4

Well, in a "kinder, gentler" mode, I think "JAH" has a point. When my daughter was dx'ed w. Crohn's disease, she almost immediately started SCD. She also started seeing a psychologist from the Children's Hospital "Medical Coping Clinic". The dr. was specially trainted to work w. kids who have chronic illness. She has worked a lot w. my dd on helping her not totally freak during blook draws, help her psychologically prep for endoscopies (and the physical prep involved), and deal with eating meat after she was raised as a vegetarian.

Dh and I were each vegetarians since our teen years. None of our kids had ever so much as had fish, until dd started on scd. I think it's a great, wonderful diet that has TOTALLY given our daughter her health back (she is now med-free. Unbelievable, given how sick she was). But, she has had to learn to eat some meat and fish. As it is, we mostly eat vegetarian as my dh and our oldest dd haven't really gotten the hang of eating meat, chicken or fish. So we eat HUGE, gross amounts of eggs and cheese.....

For us, it helped to put in the form of "this is like medicine. This is what your body needs. Let's try it and see what happens".

btw, some other ideas for extra nutritional help that sound like they would be okay w. him: add liquid, pasteurized egg whites to anything you can. Blend frozen bananas w. peanut butter (food procesesor)--comes out like ice cream. Avocados. Butter in/on anything (my dd can now eat about 1/2 stick w. a serving of pancakes at breakfast [that includes the huge amount I cook in]).

dd's GI doc said last year that we knew the diet was working b/c she was gaining weight so nicely. Maybe your son could look at it like a science experiment, to try eating meat for, say, a month and see how he feels and how his weight does?

Good luck,

Ellen
