Crohn's Diagnosis, what to expect with SCD?

Howdy,

I've had Crohn's for 3 years now but was only diagnosed in the last

month. I'm starting out on the SCD intro diet and wanted to see if

anyone could tell me some of the things to expect in the next while.

My Crohn's has be characterized by consistent D (1-3x/day, up to

10+x/day times when things are bad). Infrequent blood in BM. Frequent

discomfort and bloated feeling and bad gas. I'm not on any meds yet

and I'm thinking of trying SCD first prior to trying meds - I'd love

to avoid using them.

1. Since starting the into diet ~4 days ago i've felt a lot less

discomfort and a lot less gas, which is great, but I'm still getting

regular D 1-2 a day. Is this normal?

2. Everything I read about the diet says to introduce food slowly to

see how your body reacts to it, but it seems to say your should use

the presence of D to indicate if you can tolerate the food or not.

Since I am always having D how can i tell if the diet is working and

if I can tolerate foods I add?

3. Can anyone tell me some of the different ranges of times it has

taken people to get over D when starting out on the SCD?

Thanks a ton,

howdy yourself cowboy!!! LOL!! welcome

i was dx with celiac last oct and crohns last dec - wasn't a typical

case though so i can help a bit but will leave D questions for others

i was having 1 loose BM each a.m. and i think it took a week or so to

get solid and has changed many times since - try to get that more

solid before introducing eggs etc and yes go slow 1 new thing (food

supplement whatever ) every 2-3 days - i don't change my food and

still have issues on/off so yes it can be hard to tell but go slow

keep a diary of everything and you'll learn what works for you thru

trial/error as everyone's different

hang in good luck

I have Crohns Disease and originally had 5-7 episodes of diarrhea a day with bloating and flatulence while taking 2-3 Immodium a day and would have acidic diarrhea unless I took 2 Metamucil capsules a day. Now I have 3-5 non-acidic formed to loose BMs a day and no flatulence or bloating and have been able to stop the Immodium and Metamucil.

The bloating and flatulence stopped in the first few days. The acidic BMs stopped after a week. The formed to loose BMs fluctuate and I was even constipated one day.

I had my sigmoid colon, part of my small intestine and cecum removed a year ago and from what my doctor has said this may be the type of stool I should expect at this point so I continue to slowly introduce foods and watch for increase in diarrhea, bloating, or acidic stools.

Besides the book and this group, something that helped me was to look through the list of legal and illegal foods on Elaine Goddalls site.

Good luck!

Hi ,

For me I felt a marked difference after about 1 week on the intro diet, but I don't know if that is typical. You should allow for 1 month with fanatical adherence to the diet. After the month you will know if the diet is helping you heal. Soon enough you will be able to tell if you have eaten something with illegals in it based on how your body reacts.

I really did not experiment much my first year on the diet. My wife might say I don't experiment much now, but I'm quite happy with what I eat. Monster cookies, cheese, peanut butter, steamed veggies, some occasional meat and there are a couple of chili recipes that I like. Find a few things that agree with you and eat them. The once a week or so add something from one of the many SCD cookbooks or web sites if you want to. Take it slow, there is plenty of time and your gut heals slowly.

Also keep in mind that it is typical for the body to have a minor flair after about 2 or 3 months. For that or any another flair just fall back to the intro diet and take a close look at your diet to make sure there are not illegals sneaking in,

Best of luck to you.
