Guest guest
Hi Sharon, I do feel your pain, and I am sorry your son (and you) has to endure so much... and, yes...I do feel like screaming sometimes! :-) I can't speak to the ileostomy, but I can speak to your autoimmune issues and the diet... My 11 yo son has CD, so, for support, I went on the SCD with him. At the time, I was suffering from an unexplained swelling of my upper lip and pallet (went on for 8 agonizing years!). No doctor could give me an answer, so I was on my own. I tried various elimination diets (including gluten-free) with minimal results. I resigned myself to living in discomfort for the rest of my life. HOWEVER, when I went on the SCD, my lip started to improve! It has been a slow process, but I finally am back to my old self...never thought I could achieve this. I feel great, and have hope. For me, the SCD gave me my life back! AND, because the SCD made the visible swelling of my lip go away (when NOTHING else worked in 8 years), I KNOW the same thing has to be going on inside my son. I kind of believe my problem was an auto-immune issue, and I would highly recommend giving the SCD diet a whole-hearted effort. No matter what the ailment, I believe SCD is very healing. The SCD does take time, effort, and research, but once you get a system down you can't imagine life any other way. Especially, when your health returns, you can appreciate what a gift it is...you won't want to go back to eating " junk. " Also, if you just start the SCD for yourself (and of course, if you are the cook, others in your house will have to eat what your making...sooo.. :-) ), it might be a good motivation for your son to give it a try. If he sees SCD working for you, and that you can eat some pretty good stuff, he might not see it as so limiting. I know my son now says he will never eat " junk " again because he can recognize what " good " food really is and what it does to your body. I do think the key to success with this diet is to find some good cookbooks (I LOVE The Grain-Free Gourmet cookbooks...lots of sweets and baked items...all of them have been no fail so far...LOVE IT!), make connections (through groups like this), ask LOTS of questions, and share the tough times (plus some good recipes along the way). Really, you can do this! Your health is worth it! :-) Blessings to you and yours, DS 11 yo CD Jan 08 SCD Jan 08 10 mg pred
